Im in Krabi at the moment but my visa is about to expire. I want to get down to the Perhentian islands for a week or 2 but am not sure which is the best way.
I was thinking of a mini van to Hat Yai and then a sleeper train across the border. If anyone has done it, i would really appreciate any advice

only one train a day, don't get a package all the way to perhenthians. won't work. a taxi from kota bharu to perhenthian port will only cost 8 euro from 45 minute drive, haggle with taxis at bus station. well worth it. Perhenthians are not to be missed.

Got the sleeper train from Surat Thani down into Malaysia (Penang).
Train was late so didnt end up boarding it until 1 in the morning. Then got awoken just past the Malaysian border the next morning to dismount the train (with our giant suitcases) to go through customs, get our passports stamped etc. Back on the train then and all the beds had been put away!

Found it so difficult to haggle with taxi drivers in Malaysia. Coming from Thailand it was pretty different.

    hey samson,

how would the parethians compare to thailand regarding cost of living?

The Perhentians will be more expensive than Thailand, and since its off the Kelantan and Terranganu coasts they are in the Malaysian "Deep North". So booze is restricted, and where available, expensive, we're talking about RM10.00 (2 Euro) for a 325ml can.

    thanks for that.

actually thinking of going laos. not sure when but could one spend 3 months there? or would that be too long?

and is it much cheaper than thailand?

basically wanna go somewhere cheap for 3 months so cost obviously comes into it. i assume laos is as cheap as it gets?...

Thanks for the advice guys, got here eventually by bus and taxi from the border. Really beautiful place but a lot more expensive than Thailand and vietnam especcially drink.
As regards going to laos for 3 months, i think you would be missing out too much. Vietnam was brilliant and also very cheap if you shopped around. Cambodia is also well worth visiting for a few weeks
