Just got :p an avi file from a friend.
when I goto play it WMP gives an error and cannot play.

It's WMP10 so codec should be upto date.

    A similar file play ok.
I d/l a VLC media played and that doesn't work either.

    any ideas ?

Download Gspot. It will be able to tell you what codec is used by the avi file (and if you have it installed). WMP always has trouble with my avi files, pile o' sheet.

As was pointed out use Gspot to ID the codec but bear in mind AVI is just a container for the video to which a wide variety of codecs use.

WMP only supports certain video "official codecs" as there are a lot of unofficial/third party codecs that use the AVI container.

If i were you i'd download the k-lite codec pack, which has pretty much any concievable video codec included in it, it http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

It might include media player classic, which i find to be much better overall as a video player than WMP. hope that works!

    another thing to check is:

Right click the file > properties and check if it needs a liscence, as it could be copyright protected.

vlc not playing it makes me think it has the above !
