Right, I've found myself having been let down by two people who said they'd be able to give me some work over the Summer, and now I'm stuck with limited options.

So, I'm wondering if there's anyone who could offer me some legal-based work for the summer. I'd be happy to forward my CV to anyone interested. I'm based in Greystones (Wicklow), so Dublin somewhere would be ideal. However, I will travel, or move if needs be.

    Thanks in advance!
    hullaballoo.

I hope you're not counting me as one of those people who let you down Hull...
(says me coming from my nice law-related office)

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

In a similar vein, I too am looking for employment, from August 2006 when I finish my masters, till August 2007 when I hope to take the Inns entrance exam.

    Join the Garda reserves! :D

Or run around with 'legal adviser' on your back on Mayday and such.

I actually looked into joining the Special Constabulary over here, unfortunatly the period of time it would take for the background check to go through and training would likely exceed the 9 months I'm over here.

I have no intention of going around with a vest supporting anarchist rioters, I'm surprised if the evidence of these so called "legal observers" would ever be given much weight in court anyway.

    Roffled! That's hilarious!

I had considered ambulance chasing, but I thought it was a bit early in my career for such!

I should be telling gabhain that he has to pay boards.ie if he wants to advertise here*, but I won't because it might seem hypocritical. I'll leave that to besty.

*I don't have to pay because it's a perk of the job (according to DeV)!

Can you take legal jobs without being actually qualified as a barrister or solicitor? - would the jobs be the standard filing and photocopying?

Some solicitors told me that getting a job over the summer in a legal office will put you off law (with doing menial tasks like making coffee (thanks Maidhc!)). Not true?

I once had to take out every file in a HR company over a 7 year period and arrange them alphabetically - a week of undiluted fun!

Sounds like fun, I'm not joking I like that sort of thing, I'm weird I know.:D

There was a summer job going in one of the government departments, clerical/legal stuff.
Two things I would do, ring, write to or email every solicitor in your area to see if someone will hire you, get a temp job from a recruitment agency or look at the FAS website.

I don't really think working in a legal office would put you off because everyone has too go through the same stuff in most jobs, what will turn you off law is college(well that was in my case anyway).

    I hear McCracken is retiring!

I think just find a list of solicitors and spam them with your CV.

Ask your lecturers if they have any suggestions.

Work experience in the chosen field can only stand to you so why not a part time legal sec or similar?

What do legal secretaries do? Typing/filing/researching caselaw?

It all depends on their experience, qualifications and the office they are with. I knew a few who were secretaries period however I also knew some who did research and some of the more basic parts of a case.

Legal qualifications arent necessary but its getting more common to have some.

Hmmm, might give that a go next summer! Be a nice thing on the C.V. too (which is currently looking quite empty in the work experience section :( )
