1st try removing your HDD and re-inserting it in again, if no joy then check your BIOS settings (normally F12 or something similar at bootup) to see if the laptop detects the device. If it doesn't see it, it sounds like your HDD is dead...

It is possible track 0 on the HDD is the only thing buggered. It may be salvageable.

Get a copy of spinrite 6.0 from somewhere.
Make a boot CD on another PC to use booting up your laptop.
Change the boot disk priority in your bios so that the laptop boots from CD.
Run the repair option in Spinrite.
If it works immediately backup up everything.
    Consider buying a new drive.

/Edit I had to do this myself last week.

Another option is to get a 2.5" IDE to USB adapter (such as this one on ebay or shop around for others). Remove the drive, install the adapter, plug USB cable into host PC and hopefully the drive will appear as one or more drive letters on the host.

you can also get adapters for normal parallel ATA for connecting to desktop PCs pretty cheap, which might be handy for diagnosing.

Seriously I'd advise you back up your important documents the next time that you manage to get the PC switched on and running. If the HD is buggered as I sounds like it is, then retrieving documents off the "Disk" itself inside is a costly and troublesome business, Backup first then get to the bottom of the problem later.

A stitch in time saves nine!
