what are the best filesharing programs available for use on the intel macs?

at the moment i'm using bittorrent which is unacceptably slow and limewire which won't even load..

are there any clients with universal binary yet?
if not, which are best suited to rosetta?

I'm using Transmission, which is a good BT client. Azuerus is also a unibin I think, but I found it very slow under windows so steered clear.

What type of internet connection are you using ? What company ? Have you got a router between you and the 'net? Maybe it's a firewall or NAT issue rather than the Macbook or Intel machine.

Opinions seem to differ on the compatability of Limewire with Macbooks, some say it should work, others . . . . I was under the impression that Java apps were platform independent, I thought that was the whole point, is this not so ?

Have you got the latest Java download from Apple ? What error do you get when Limewire fails if any ? Have you got the latest version which claims to have Intel support.

/edit: You will need to completely uninstall the old Limewire version. Spotlight it and delete every thing relating to it.

aha! cheers for that, didn't realise the latest version had intel support..
(on a bb connection, no firewall)

Which BB company ? Eircom, Clearwire . . . ??? Clearwire block all P2P and fileshare ports. Others may have different policies or restrictive practices.

You may need to open some ports on your router in order for filesharing to work properly.

using bt.. just got it installed today actually..
the p2p is going ok so far but i may reformat and use a windows systems for filesharing because, after a fresh install of osx, i just don't trust limewire on new macbook.. (have even heard reports of it automatically deleted some critical files from the librarys folder)

anyway, it's slowing down the computer, thanks for the info though..

use transmission, its a very fast BT client, i get speeds up to about 500kbps sometimes.

I am guessing he means Limewire is slow as in the app is slow.
When I had only 256MB ram in my powerbook, Limewire was PAINFULLY slow.

So i'm guessing you just don't have enough RAM. 512MB is really paltry for the macbook, I would suggest you upgrade as soon as you can.
