It's disgraceful that what used to be seen (and is still recognised by insurance co's) as a highly skilled job is now paying barely above minimum wage.
What are Stobarts paying? something like €9 per hour? it's not right.

Yep 9e an hour something in stobarts for a so called professional driver who if started out from scratch would have to fork out up to 4/5k to get all the licences including the specialization ones.
The only way the wages will ever get back to a decent wage is when the older guys retire and young lads/gals wanting to drive don't bother forking out there hard earned cash to drive for peanuts not to mention the responsibilities&dealings with the Gardai/RSA&HSA.

the only time wages will improve for drivers is when haulage rates haulage achieve improve and this will not happen in the short term, if ever.

To be honest, truck driving was never a well paid job and never will be. Like you'll never do a 40 hour week (legally), many are paid by the trip and the trip can take days and run over schedule, so when broken down in hours, some drivers are on less that €5 an hour and with no subsistance/phone etc- its mad but a reality and with all the foreign drivers working for half nothing and living in the trucks, they'll keep the wage rate low too.

Depends on what you mean by well paid lads in a place I work in are on a basic of around 40K with shift allowance/ OT not included in their basic wage but they have a sh*tload of responsibility,I'm well aware of drivers working for €80 a day regardless if they do 8hrs or 15hrs a day which is less than the min wage.
It's an employers market right now and some companies are falling over them selves using the R word as an excuse to hammer employee T&C while creaming some serious profits.

Driving jobs with good t&c's are very rare these days, most now doing well to get 80-100e/day (up to 15hr working day) or doing continent getting trip money and nothing extra for waiting for loads etc. Back when I gave it up, was getting paid by load/ trip and worked out about 12e/hr after deductions, but when it got quite you got nothing only told to go to dole office.
