I've just finished my accounting and finanace degree and now, unfortuately, I have to think about joining the workforce. What would be the best way to go about things? should i go to an agency or should i apply to companies directly? Any advice would be much appreciated. Also should I wait until I get my actual final results in a months time?

As a graduate you're probably better applying to companies directly.

If you can get a job directly then that's the best way to go. You'll get a more secure contract and you won't have to worry about the agency taking a cut of your salary.

saw one or two ads for trainee accountants, grads, on the usual websites there recently (irishjobs, monster...). good starting salaries too. look at those.

but as a rule, go direct to a company if you can.

agencies are money grabbing swines (mostly) ;)

I was a graduate this time last year, So I realise the position you are in. I sent my CV to hundreds of companies, I searched directories on the internet to find them and then posted my CV to them. I also applied to agencies but they are much less likely to get back to you. I think you are better just to send your CV to companies, whether they have a job available or not. I've had 2 jobs since college, 1 contract, and I got both of them from just sending in a CV & Covering letter, I wasnt applying for a specific job as they had none advertised but still got going! Make sure tou have **** hot cover letter as well as your CV. Graduates CV's tend to be fairly similiar so if you can do a good cover letter, It will help you. Many people make the mistake of ignoring their letter and just throwing it together. I asked my bosses what was it that they liked about my application and both said they were very impressed with my cover letter.

    So just send send send!

Agencies can be very good though. I myself am in the exact same position as the o/p I finished my accounting and finance degree last week.

I've sent my cv off to loads of companies and they havent responeded though I have some experience in accounting.

The same company put through and agency have said they would like to interview me. Personally I dont mind if they take some of my wages cos once i have built up experience and get my ACCA's i know i wil be on good wages.

    thats my two cents

Ok Im only going into third year this year so maybe Im way off the mark but dont most people apply for jobs during their final year not after it. Like last november, december or january?

It depends on where you want to go.

If you want to work in the practice for example the big 4, then you apply for jobs in October. However if you want to go down a different avenue and want to work in industry or financial services then you start applying now.

    Hope that helps

I'm a recent graduate and went to irishjobs.ie last night and uploaded my CV. I've already had two e-mails and a phone call since.

They've loads of positions for graduates so I'd recommend them.

Not sure where you're based, but theres plenty of graduate level financial positions listed on www.gradireland.ie. May be something at your location.
