    bold.

    what ports are currently open?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 252 ✭✭An Gaiscíoch

I haven't an iota !!! I was just wondering if it was in anyway possible. It actually would just be poker. If it's too complicated I wont go near it !!!

different poker clients use different ports.

All tribeca software works on my connection but others are blocked by the firewall.

If you find out what ports are needed to play with the software you use you can go to the people who manage the accommodation and ask them to open the ports.

This information should be available on the poker softwares websites if not just e-mail them.

Can't see the admins opening up a port to play poker.

I'd open it, for a slice of your rake.

maybe if you say what college it is then some students who go there may be able to say whether they ever managed to get around the firewall???

If you are working there then they may make an exception and it is possible to open the port for just you.

They can assign certain port numbers to be open to your MAC address only.
If you dont know your MAC address uniquely identifies your computer on the net.

I love it when people come along and refer to the group they are about to beg help from as "techie geeks". lol!

On topic, does anyone know what port number poker traffic is sent on? is it SSLed (I presume it must be but I dont know for sure, maybe its on a proprietary encryption and port number).

If an employee came to me asking would I open a port for him to play poker he would spend the rest of the afternoon trying to remove a dealer button from his forehead.

I doubt this would work on a secure site but i guess you can try it out, google proxy:

    http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/h/4807

it is useful for kind of getting around programs like websense that ban certain sites (e.g. gambling sites...)

I think different poker sites use different ports. By default Pokerstars uses 26002 which is presumably registered to them, and can be set up to use 443 (in case your firewall blocks the big numbered ports and you can't change it). 443 is usually https, but they may not use SSL.

For Tribeca (PPP, VC etc.) use a program called "Proxifier", AFAIK that routes all tribeca comms through your ssl (port 443) which should be open on your firewall.

For every other network you'll need to use "httptunnell" and "sockscap", google them, as long as your firewall lets you browse the web (port 80 + 443) then you will be able to use these two programs to connect. I couldn't be arsed writing a howto, theres plenty out there, go look at the forum on the httptunnel site.

As long as 80 + 443 are open you should be able to use any site.

    edit: for spelling of "sockscap"

Do you know how to set pokerstars up to use port 443 ? Is it during setup or after

You can change it at any time. To do this you have to open a web browser and go to google.com. Search for pokerstars+firewall+443 and one of the results is a page on Pokerstars' own site. That will tell you which file to edit.

Thanks Roundtower. I found the page you were talking about but the instructions were a little vague. I emailed support looking for more instructions. They replied (very promptly) and I've managed to get it working. I've copied in the instructions below in case anyone else is interested.

    thanks again.

    Hello,

PokerStars' software uses one of two ports by default. These ports are 443 and 26002. In addition, the updater software uses port 80.

Sometimes either an ISP or a personal firewall will be blocking one of these ports. You may be able to work around this blockage by changing the port that PokerStars' software uses from one to the other.

To do this, you will need to change a line in the text file USER.INI.
You will find this file in the PokerStars folder which is normally found in the Program Files folder on your primary hard drive (usually the C: drive).

Make sure you have closed the PokerStars program. Load USER.INI into Notepad or your favorite text editor (don't use a word processor). If there is not a [Connect] section, add one, followed by the userport line with the port number.

Here is how the [Connect] section should look after your
    modifications:

    [Connect]
    userport=443

You may interchange 443 and 26002 above, trying either one.

Now I'm curious if they ssl the data before transit. If not they *could* be open to an interception attack. Anyone sitting on your network *might* be able to sniff the packets and determine the cards, though this is purely theoretical as I'm not sure if they could easily target another player. Curious though, I wonder if they are encrypted. Surely they must be...

if it's trinity you haven't a hope going through admin lines. email netsoc, they may sort you out.
    also look into httptunnel.com

Well 443 is meant to be SSL. I'm sure there's some encryption done.
