Problem with Sun Monitor

I managed to acquire a SUN 21" Flatsceen CRT from a mate whose company that were getting rid of some of their old hardware.

I just powered it up last night, but there seams to be something wrong with the tube, its got a greenish tint and everything seams too bright, plus when the background is black you can see some static green circular lines (about 2 inch's apart). These lines are faint green, about 2mm wide and can only really be seen against a black background. Also, black looks medium grey/green because of this brightness/tint issue.

I've seen these sort of symptoms before on old TVs. When I've seen it on TV's it usually only lasts 10-15 minutes from then the TV is turned on and then just rectifies itself (sometimes with the help of a swift kick!). Kinda like the TV needed to warm up first or something. But, I had the monitor on last night for about 4 hours and it was still the same.

Now, this monitor may not have been powered up for a long time, and possibly was not left in the most ideal storage (maybe cold or damp).

Usually, if I saw this happen I'd just bin the thing, but this is a really good monitor so I want to try an rescue it.

Any idea what this might be, or what I could look at to fix it. (I don't mind opening it up as ling as someone can tell me what I'm looking for).

I wouldn't go opening it up. Monitors can store a lot of current for long periods after being powered off.

Sounds like a failing tube with screen burn in from a wallpaper. If you cant live with it then bin it.

The screen might not be stained - maybe it's just the degausser has stopped working. Did you try degaussing if there is a button/menu option? Though the greyness wouldn't be caused by this.

And yeah, Sun monitors are usually (if not always?) Sony Trinitrons, so they're very good. Get it checked out by someone more familiar with CRTs if you think it'll be worth it - I wouldn't bother if it's over 6-7 years old though (should be a manuf. date somewhere on the back).

Its not screen burn, I know what screen burn looks like and this is definitely not it. Degaussing works fine but makes no difference. I think it what I feared, just a failing tube. Its 5 years old so probably not worth getting fixed, but I think I will take a look at it myself before I bin it.
Anyways, thanks for the help guys.
