    Hi all,
i have a camcorder which records in asf format. I'm looking for a way to convert the .asf files on my mac to mpeg format if possible. maybe there's a way to convert asf to wmv then to mpeg?

i've found some shareware for PC that do it (with limitations) but there doesn't seem to be any for mac.

i would appreciate if anyone could help on this.
    thanks.

ASF = WMV it's just a different container intended for streaming video you can rename the .asf file .wmv and most if not all programs that convert wmv into something else should handle it.

As for MPEG-4 conversion programs I'm not familiar with the Mac variants only the PC side though keep in mind Apple have their own little variant of MPEG-4 ASP & MPEG-4 AVC [H.264] that doesn't adhere to the standard profiles in the specs so any Windows program must have an Apple profile to convert it or know the correct encoding settings if you want to play it back in QuickTime.

If you have a Windows PC the best option in Windows that I know of would be StaxRip which has a QuickTime H.264 profile or Nero which has a MPEG-4 ASP QuickTime profile but only a MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 profile for the Apple iPod.

SatxRip is free and easy enough to use but can be tricky in certain aspects. Nero is a commercial application with a very easy to follow GUI in order to maintain compatibility with QuickTime you must tick the somewhat hidden box for QuickTime support.

Assuming your gonna go with Nero start Nero recode; choose convert videos and DVD's to Nero Digital drag and drop your .asf into the window, select "Nero Digital" from the profile category & "standard" from the profile section.

Click next under burn options select "hard disk folder" & then a target folder, then click on the "Nero Digital Settings" icon, tick the box for expert mode, under "advanced" tick the box for "Simple Profile QuickTime Compatibility" now click burn and wait for it to finish.

The end result file should be playable in QuickTime on your Mac, if you convert the asf/wmv into MPEG-2 I think Handbrake will convert that and so will QuickTime Pro on the Mac. Also if you have QuickTime Pro I'd see if that Flip4Mac wmv plug-in for QuickTime allows you to convert your .wmv into QuickTime compliant MPEG-4 although you might want to ask on a Mac site.

Edit: It looks like the Pro version of Flip4mac is whats needed for the import, conversion and editing of wmv/asf on the Mac into iMovie, QuickTime & such so if you want to do the conversion work on the Mac I'd say that is your best bet.

[If you want to use the free StaxRip to do the job on your PC let me know and I will show you the steps to convert to QuickTime H.264]
