Fat Cats

    Hello,
My family have two 6 and a half year old cats. They've always been quite large lenght wise but in the past year they've got kinda fat.

They are getting more and more spoilled, a tin of whiskas a day each and scraps from the fridge and table every day and have started to eat what they hunt.

They live outside during the day and all night, but are in during the evening so they *should* be exercising.

We had two kittens, 8 months old, but one was killed last week by a car :(:( so there's a slight tendancy to spoil the cats and the remaining kitten now even more.

The Kitten only eats what he wants, and isn't too bothered about scraps, he also likes to drink water.

But the two big ones will eat until they explode, the female was always like this (we think it's because their mother was wild) but the male has gone very whiny and is always begging now too.

They get a lot of attention but it usually leads to them getting something nice from the fridge.

Is there any *healthy* way of treating them? The last thing we need is for them to get sick or over weight.

I tried cat nip to get them active but it just made em sleepier.

They won't eat dry food or drink water. Well, they'll eat the dry food but they'll puke it back up so we stopped giving it to them.

Someone told me that feeding them "wet" food is like feeding a person chocolate all the time.

They need to be disciplined again I guess, coz they've got terrible habits.

Any thoughts on my fat cats?

The reason they are getting it sick it because its shock to their system. Have you tried mixing some dry food into the can and gradually having them only on dry food? The treats from the fridge have to stop, I always want to give our little one something off the table, but then they will think they can get what they want by crying and whinging :)

Go to myfatkat.com, it might make you feel better, even my old cat, (shes ten) isn't as big as these, and she's about ten times the size of my kitten.

Yeah we did mix in the dry with the wet, still pukeys!

I suppose it is just a matter of tough love as far as the table is concerned

    Hey there! :)

Obeisity is a sign of compromised health. Feeding a cat canned or packets of wet food all the time is like feeding them chocolate every day...but feeding them dry kibble is like feeding them crisps. This type of food is junk food, and not at all good for kitty.

I suggest looking into the raw-food diet to bring back proper health and weight.

My cat was on kibble for years because I didn't know there was any alternative way to feed her. I never really noticed too much, however, because she was outdoors all day and would catch and eat mice and birds; she only nibbled the dry cat nuts. When she became an inside cat, however, she started gaining weight like crazy. I felt awful for her...her mood was changed, she was grouchy all the time, and slept most of the day.

A veterinarian friend pointed me in the direction of the raw-food diet and neither my kitty nor I have ever looked back. She maintains a healthy weight, is the most loving kitty ever, and has not needed a trip to the vet in years.

Good luck with your kitties! :)

This image from that site actually looks quite like my older cats. There was also another one I found that looked almost identical to my female...

    This looks quite interesting, thanks!
