Maths - The Ten Theorems

Would anyone happen to know of a site that I could get the ten theorems on the Higher level syllabus from? Our Teacher didn't bother with the book (The explanations are awful), instead electing to write them on the board, and we'd take them down. I was absent for a few of them, so I'm a bit behind and I'm starting to worry. Thanks a million.

I did the JC in 2004 and didnt know thoerems at all and still got an A so dont worry too much bout them. try www.skoool.ie

    they might be on that

I no its nt on da internet, but did u try the rapid revision book. Its really god, all required theroms simply explained!

    Good Luck!:)

Thanks, I'll give it a look. And thanks for the look :P

Maybe I won't need to know all the theorems, but it'd be nice to have them in case. I've more or less got everything else covered, I think (read: hope).

The ones you need to know are listed in the first few pages of the Edco papers, and the ones that got asked in exams are on the Edco site (e-xamit.ie).
    Try copying from a friend?
Personally, I found to book to be fine but what really helped was using real dimensions to draw the diagrams, so you can test your results, etc. eg, the Equiangluar Theorem(Th.12).

If it's just a few, post the ones you need and get forumers to help.

Shortcuts to Success is also a good one, has them laid out fairly well etc

in my opinion i wouldnt trust the edco papers for the 10 thereoms. really there are 12 theroems but really only the 10 are asked to be proved. thats what the edco papers stipulate. you could get the other 2 theroems as an actual question using numbers etc. so really you should know all 12 not 10

I think I'm sorted for some notes on them, and I'll be able to borrow one of the revision books. Thanks for the help, nice one.

Wow, I only remember doing about six theorems... a lot of them are just deductions from other theorems though, or converses.
But yeah, they're a nice way for getting marks, just gotta be able to reproduce a theorem and that could be the c part of a question done.

    Which ones are these?

Just a tip our teacher said to watch out for Pythagoras' therom cos it wasnt up in the samole paper or any of the past papers.

    My teacher said that too.

Theorems are the Bane of my existence. They killed my father, and raped my mother. Everyone's like "omg you shud get full marks 4 dem cuz u just haf 2 lern dem lolz n00b!" but no!

Although I have Pythagorous Theorem down so it'd better come up *grumble*

Tell me about it. I learnt everyone of the others no problem but my mind just seems to be blocked when it comes to that. I'll doubt it'll come up though. I'll try and learn it anyway.

I used to till I just did it out with measurements, the same applies to Pythaggy's Theorem. Text & Test's explanation is pretty poor, so if you still have school, ask your teacher.

My guess is:Pythagoras and Opposite Sides Of A //ogram

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 137 ✭✭disney

Vertically opposite angles are equal in measure has not come up yet (possibly "too easy"?)

The three measures of a triangle sum to 180
Opposite sides and angles of a parralelogramare respectively equal in measure
    The one about the tangent
    Pythagoras

Those 5 have never come up (in sample paper or accutual papers), all the other have.

Good luck to all, I know I'll need it!!!!

    (But do I care?!)

    What the hell's that?

    These also haven't come up:

All angles at the circumference on the same arc are equal in measure.

An angle subtended by a diameter at the circumference is a right angle (that's easy, hope it comes up)

The sum of the angles of a cyclic quadrilateral is 180

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 137 ✭✭disney

The tangent thing is n page 265 of thetests and texts book, we didint do it but i presume u av 2.

Those three are jus deductions, but cud still come up.

although its rarely a theorem question its always used in some part of a geomatry question
the angle at the centre of a circle is twice the angle on the opposite whatever
must check up on that actually becuase i clearly don't know it as well as i thought i did :D
anyway we got till monday to learn the theoroms so its not to bad

my worry is science were on the new course and the exam papers were fair hard and you have to answer every question

Dont worry about that man. Those exam papers aren't department papers and are far too hard to appear in the JC

actually you're wrong, theorem 7 contains all of those 3 deductions which came up last year. also thoerem 6 "the measure of the angle at the centre of a circle is twice the measure of the angle at the circumference standing on the same arc" came up last year. IMO pythagoras is a defo to show. also the new syllabus states that only the first 10 thoerms have to be studied yet others may come up as short questions.

For the 10 theorems, you just really need to study 4.

1-4 is simple.. just basic maths.

the 2 from last year wont be on it.

    = 4 to really learn.

Yeah but there's a loadda 'deductions' or whatever the bejaysus they're called in some of them which is a pain in the ass.

    Will we definetly get two?

Do the theorems show up on paper 1 or paper 2?

Please respond uickly if you can becasue I'm starting to worry a bit. :o

    Two! :D:D

Know them 4 next Monday. :)

    Woohoo!

Paper 1 won't be too hard for me tomorrow although I haven't done much (if any) study for it so that's a relief..

Paper 2 will be a ball grabber though.

    I still don't understand it.

    the rate of what now!!!????

    As uve guessed I am"class at maths*"!!!!!!!!!!

Water flows through a circular pipe of internal diameter 3cm at the rate of 14cm/second. How long will it take to fill a cylinder of base diameter 14cm and height 45cm?

Taken from Text and Tests II, page 165

Something like that has never come up and never will.If it does,in a less difficult form

Meh, the exam has only been going for 3 years, you never know.
No harm looking at the solution anyway, it clicked with me after I read it a few times there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭Stompbox

    I <3 Trigonometry.

    Some geometry makes me cry.

    Statistics are just tedious really.

Theorems don't stay in my head.

Co-ordinate geometry is fun (yes, FUN) so long as I remember formulae.
