Roche publishes Guidance on Energy Performance of New Buildings

"I am delighted to publish guidance to help designers and builders
comply with certain key requirements of the EU Energy Performance of
Buildings Directive", said Mr Dick Roche, T.D., Minister for the
Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The Minister was commenting
today (31 May 2006) on the publication of the 2006 Edition of Technical
Guidance Document L on Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Energy) of the
    national Building Regulations.

Well its about time! Minister Roche has been very reluctant to date to publicise this looming issue of the EU Directive on Energy Performance, even though it will affect every homeowner and landlord in the country.

There's a fascinating row between Gerry McCaughey (Kingspan/Century Homes), The concrete industry, and the Minister on this issue. McCaughey obtained a freedom of information file from the Dept Environment some time ago that gave an interesting insight in to the relationship between the government and concrete industry.

There was a note attached to the file, written by the Minister, saying that he was aware of the pending EU directive, but was reluctant to make it public knowledge as yet because of the devastating effect it would have on the hollow block industry, particularly in Dublin. Obviously McCaughey has an agenda to promote timber over concrete but an FOI file is an FOI file, and I seen it with me own eyes!

If the minister has been putting the welfare of the concrete industry over that of Irish citizens then it's yet another worrying indication of Mick The Builder's influence over this government.
