Network situation: need static addressing scheme

Don't know why i can't figure this out.. been trying out various methods / schemes and been reading up but just can't get it done!

I'm really not sure if this belongs here or in Console Modding but since i'm more worried about the addressing scheme, i'll try here.

OK.. essentially my network setup is made up of the following:

- 1 PC downstairs hooked up via Ethernet to a Netopia Cayman 3347W Wireless Router
- 1 Laptop upstairs accessing the Net via Wireless from downstairs
- 1 XBOX connected to the laptop with a crossover cable via laptop NIC (essentially the Local Area Connection on the laptop)

What i've been doing up until now is putting all devices above on the 192.168.1.X subnet. For example:

PC (Downstairs): 192.168.1.2
Laptop (Upstairs): 192.168.1.3
XBOX: 192.168.1.4

The reason i require this is i wish to set up the XBOX on the same subnet to share the Internet connection with the laptop and essentially access XLink-Kai (XBOX Gaming Community).

But all devices lose connection when the Local Area Connection is indicated as connected.

Also unsure of what exactly to have for the DNS / Gateway for each device?

And also i read somewhere than WAN links need to be on a seperate subnet.. this true?

Sorry i'm asking a lot but this really has be stumped!

PS - mods, if you and / or contributors to the thread feel this would better be served in Console Modding, please move it!

PPS - for those who need a simply crudely drawn diagram of the network situation described.. see below:

OK.. XBOX and Laptop are now communicating via the local area connection successfully on a 192.168.0.X subnet but the wireless connection drops out whenever the XBOX / Local Area Connection is active.

Tried putting the laptop on the same subnet and wouldn't work at all and with dynamic addressing, it only works when the XBOX is switched off (or essentially the connection is not active between it and the laptop).

So any suggestions on how to share the connection?

PS - this could definantly be moved to Console Modding now mods please!

You could just enable Internet connection sharing on the laptops wireless connection and then just let the x-box pull an ip down from the dhcp running on the laptop. Then automagically you should have your net traffic routed through the wiffy and to the dsl.

Yeah.. that was how i had it set-up previously but i read somewhere that XLink-Kai apparently requires a static address for communication between both the client on the PC and the application running on the XBox.

Will do a bit more reading anyways.

Two points:

1) Use this for the XBOX. Simplifies the network setup. Would allow you to set static ip to xbox.

2) I think you might be going slightly wrong with your ip address settings. I have a gut feeling that the laptop and xbox should be in one ip address range (192.168.1.x say) and the laptop, PC and router in another (192.168.2.x). The laptop acts as a gateway for connectivity between the two networks.

Yeah, what he said. The laptop and xbox connected via crossover are physically a separate LAN, so you can't use the same subnet. You should set up Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop so you can use the laptop as a gateway to the other LAN (you may have to install ICS from the windows cd - under networking tools or something), or get a wireless bridge for your xbox.

would this not be a million times easier, if you put the xbox and lan of the laptop on a different network ?

say

Xbox - 10.0.0.1
Laptop Lan - 10.0.0.2

Run a kai on the laptop, and set the xbox to connect to 10.0.0.2

You will be able to route through the internet connection.

Easy

You dont need an IP address on the xbox to access xlink kai. The Kai engine on your PC detects your xbox by its MAC address not IP address so all you have to do is connect the xbox to the laptop via a crossover cable and select the correct network card (1 of 2 options) in the kai engine config (it usually automatically picks the correct one but try the other one if you are having problems).

Now fire up halo2 or something on the xbox, go to system link and go to the game lobby (ie the place where you look for a list of games) but dont create a game

Start Kai on the PC and got to the xbox-first persons shooters->halo2 and set your status to "I want to join".

After that, you should go straight to the diagnostics (click the magnifying glass), look for the line that says Network Reachable:yes/not yet and make sure it says yes (if not, then you've got windows firewall or something blocking the connection or you selected the wrong network adapter in the kai config tool)

Once you've got to the stage where it says Network Reachable:yes then you want to see if it is detecting the xbox. You do this while in diagnostics view by clicking the icon on the right and it switches to a screen where it shows detected xboxes. You should have 1 xbox detected but it will detect several xboxes on a LAN if they are present.

Cheers for that silverlining but need to get the XBOX to access my PC connection first.

OK.. forget about the router downstairs. It's quite clear that isn't technically involved!

So have my wireless connection (the Internet connection) retrieving an address (192.168.1.X) via DHCP. My Local Area Connection is now at 10.0.0.2 (SNM:255.255.255.0) and my XBOX is 10.0.0.3 (SNM: 255.255.255.0). Have enabled ICS also on my wireless connection by checking the box but is there any services i need to add alongside that? (via the Advanced Settings next to it)

Still isn't communicating but what about the DNS / Default Gateway addresses for my Local Area Connection and XBOX? This is where i think the problem is occuring.

Any suggestions? Physically tearing my hair out!

on laptop wireless set DNS and gateway to the router ip address. Also on laptop wired connection set DNS and gateway to the router ip address. On xbox set dns and gateway to laptop ip address.

Many thanks all... especially irlrobins for those last bits of confusion regarding the DNS / Gateway.

Now finally got my Xlink-Kai working and also a nice shiny share with the contents of my external hard drive... yummy!

Thanks again all!
