plugged it into laptop, hooked up to TV, spent hours messing about with settings and nothing

tell me where im going wrong. have an acer ferrari 4005 with ATI graphics card, have changed all settings i can think of and pressed 'function+F6' to change monitor types.

Nothing, zero, zilch.. doing my nut in.

I have one of those s-video cables for my toshiba laptop and I got it to work. It has an ATI graphics card as well so it may work the same way. I'm not in front of my laptop now so i'll try to remember.

When you right click on the desktop and go to desktop properties, you go to the last tab, which should be the one for selecting screen size. I think there is another button for advanced settings which brings you to the graphics card settings. Either that or go to the graphics card settings instead.

Then there should be a tab to select which screen to pick, the tv or the laptop. You can turn on both at the same time but you have to select which one plays videos as only one of them can play videos at a time. I think you have to turn one off to turn the other on. A bit confusing at first but easy enough to figure out.

    Hope this helps

yeah ive done all of that before but to no avail. :(

did you have to change the laptop screen resolution before you got a picture on the TV?

might just be my TV, i must try it out on others as mine is a widescreen but extra wide screen as far as i remember so might be cranky when it comes to resolution and size.

bring res down to 720x480 , go to display propertys advanced settings ,switch on second ,tv, display on right side, read your laptop manual,i,m using composite output on my toshiba laptop.standard tvs work round 720 resolution.max.depends on what driver you have on your, card as to, how to switch on disply,go thru all advanced tabs/settings.you may have switch on laptop,to switch on tv,external video output.

What is at the other end of the cable? i.e. is it s-video to s-video or s-video to <something else>?

Also, in all the laptops I have ever encountered, I have never had to change resolution to get a picture on the TV.

Try turning off the laptop, plugging in the s-video cable and then turning back on the laptop, making sure, of course, that the TV is on before the laptop.

Edit: you might get a better response on the laptops forum

No, it's not just you. I bought an extra-long s-video cable for my projector and the quality was also dire. Had to switch back to standard VGA which kinda' limited where I put the laptop and projector.

im using an s video to scart cable, tv doesnt have s-video. would the problem lie there?

    Hmmmm.

There are plenty of well documented problems over on the laptop forum about s-video to scart cable giving a black and white picture, but not much on this particular problem.

See can you get a picture on another TV.

Could be wrong on this but as there may be a difference in how it is wired could it be your cable converts scart output to s-video and what your looking for is a s-video cable that converts the signal to a scart input.

Does your TV support composite can you try it with that or try a s-video to scart adaptor they come with a switch that sets the scart adaptor to input or output in your case you'd want it set to input I think..
