    Hello
i was looking at a new Imac but als do not have the space. I am now looking at the MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2GHz Intel Core Duo.

I am looking for a bit of advice as i run a PC at the mo. My PC is a 2.93 Ghz running 1 gig if Ram, 1074x768 screen res.

Would the Mac book pro running a gig and Elemets 4.0 be a lot better, faster?
Also what would be the max usable screen resolution i could expect while keeping the speed to the max.
This would be used as a non gaming machine just used on the net and post processing Photos from a Nikon D70

Advise please before i splash the cash :D

i have an mbp and i find it fantastic - 15" 1.83 core duo - you dont say what type of processor you have but the macbook should be suit your requirements - also consider at least 1gb of RAM , all in all a very powerful machine, plus the option of inferior Windows, if needed....oh max. screen res is 1440 x 900, find it fine, no slowness at all....
Also consider using Aperture, for your photo processing

I have the Intel process P4

can the MBP run at a screen res of 1900x1200 which i run a a Dell Latitude D800?

not sure - max screen res on 15" is 1440x900, but maybe higher , when hooked up to an external display...the 17" mbp has a higher res. 1600 x 1000 i think...

the 17" max res is 1680x1050 on the internal panel, but if you have it hooked up to an external monitor it'll drive anything going!! hell it'll drive the 30" cinema display no problem...and that runs at 2560 x 1600

the 2ghz 15" has 128vram so wont hit the ultra high res but it'll drive 1900x1200 no prob (23" monitor me thinks)....if you go for the 2.16ghz version - that has the same 256mb card as the 17"

Brookie, I have the MBP and a D70.
The main problems I have with the MBP are the heat and noise issues, but these appear to have been fixed with later releases.
I wouldn't go for Aperture - most tof the development team have been sacked and I couldn't install in on my MBP - it wouldn't recognise the Intel processor.
Photoshop runs OK. Not the fastest, but it runs. If that's all you're going to use it for, I'd get a PPC Powerbook. There's a lot of Intel compatability issues out there.

PPC Powerbook is Power PC Powerbook, Apples top end laptops of old. In theory, this is a desktop or as near to only in notebook size. For the most part, they won't be a patch in terms of performance of a Macbook Pro and an Intel CPU (2Ghz 64 Bit dual core Intel versus 32 bit 1.6Ghz single core G4 on paper is 4-5 times faster), but still a nifty unit nonetheless, and deadly silent as well; worth looking at if you can get a bargain in this line.

would i be right or wrong inthinking my PC specs would be quicker than the MBP 2.16Ghz running Elements? and doing photo edits.
I would really only use it for Elements 4.0, and surfing the web. I know music and films would be fine but i dont want it to struggle on edits, crops etc on quite big Raw files from the camera. If so i would be better upgrading my PC

remember that the MBP is a CoreDuo machine....... i.e. 2 cores, each running at 2.16Ghz, effectively its a multi-processor machine. That and the chips are cased around a different architecture than the P4, a more efficient one at that!

    The MBP is a scorcher

althuogh if using Adobe products is a *key* issue all that spec won't matter much as they will be running through Rosetta (i.e. emulation), until Adobe bring out Intel / Universal binaries for their products... this blog entry has some benchmarks to compare Photoshop running on the MacBook Pro and the PowerBookG4:
    http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=104

having said that, one of the people I know who has the 15" MBP has run PhotoShop ok, but said you wouldn't want to be running (m)any other apps at the same time if you wanted to do anything intensive... and cram as much memory as you can afford into it
