How much are you looking to spend ? Do you mean new or 2nd hand ?

If your talking about 2nd hand I have a Pci-express nvidia geforce 6200 sitting here (256mb shared mem) - is that the sort of thing your looking for ?

I want to spend as little as possible - i need an svideo out on the card as i want to stream video from my pc to tv

    how much for yours?

That one has an s-video and one regular video monitor output- it will run half life 2 no probs, quake 4 on mid-low settings and as far as I remember it will not run FEAR except slowly and on the ultra lowest settings.

If your not using it for latest high end gaming its a decent enough card - yours for 25 Euros. Should tell you now it uses that hyper-memory/shared memory technology so it will say 256mb vid memory in device manager but its really system memory - the actual onboard is 64mb.

It should be fine for streaming vid output to your tv. Let me know if your interested - if not no worries.

    Matrox G550 PCIe
    Manufacturer site
That was the best I could find, PCIe x1 graphics cards are really, really rare.
PCIe 1x is for GigE network cards, maybe 2-port sata raid cards. PCIe 2x and 4x are for larger storage controllers. Graphics cards are usually on PCIe x16. PCIe x8 slots are usually PCIe x16 form-factor

Damnit ! Thanks SyxPak - I hadnt noticed that.

This is not going to work in that case - its a PCIe 16x.

Getoff - are you sure its a pciexpress x1 slot ? If so this is not going to work. Most Pci-express motherboards have a pci-express video card slot which can take this card - if its a funky mobo with just a pci-e 1x slot this wont work.

Sorry for the confusion on that I completely forgot about pci-e versions.

He's probably looking for a x16 card, but there's always the chance. Was surprised to see both your posts above after I posted. May have saved ye the hassle, or at worst, delayed ye for 5 minutes.
I could see a use for PCIe1x graphics cards for mupltiple head, HD-related fuzzy-standards cards etc.

definitely a PCI express 1 video card required - it's a Dell 3100 and the customer support told me that is what I need.

extract from dell customer support chat this evening:

"Agent (Meena_Sharma): "I am afraid, there is no upgrade for video card in this machine."
    05/29/2006 09:35:47PM Agent (Meena_Sharma): "However,there is a PCI expressX1 slot in your machine."
05/29/2006 09:36:28PM Me: "ok, what does that mean? PCI expressX1"
05/29/2006 09:36:46PM Agent (Meena_Sharma): "You can contact any of your local technician or any of the third party retailers who might provide you with PCI express 1 video card."
05/29/2006 09:37:22PM Agent (Meena_Sharma): "You can contact any of the third party retailers, however Dell does not provide PCI express 1 cards."
05/29/2006 09:37:44PM Me: "and this should solve my problem - thank you."
05/29/2006 09:37:48PM Agent (Meena_Sharma): "PCI express X1 is a type of slot inside your machine."

    What machine do you have?
Probably has onboard graphics. In which case you're fncked.
    Dude, You Got A Dell!
That Matrox card is a PoS unless you do nothing but Excel and browse with 3+ monitors.

Ok then this card is definitely no use to you ! sorry about that.

For the price of that matrox one - youd nearly be better off buying a new mobo and then upgrading the video card.

If your keeping the mobo your best bet may be the matrox one SyxPak posted the link to unless anyone else has one out there?

    I'm knackered alright - thought I had a good m/c but 2nd thoughts now.

    Thanks for all the help.

Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator GMA 900 - that's what you have onboard. It's cack.

You *could* go down the PCI route, I think the nVidia GeForce 5700LE PCi is the fastest consumer-level PCI card you can buy. Rare though. PM Doodee about it, I think he picked one up recently. adverts.ie/ebay.ie otherwise.

and how would I get this , they don't post to here.

Also if I was using this could I use the PC monitor at the same time

That's just the first hit I came across on google...try ebay maybe.

This may not be a silver bullet, could be compatibility issues, I don't know much about the differences bewteen a VGA signal and an S video signal...something a bit more costly like an external VGA converter box might be a better option.
Or maybe a bigger monitor instead of outputting to TV?

As for using your PC at the same time? No
