Audio issues on PC

My pc seems to have given up the ghost as far as audio is concerned, no standard speakers work, and I've even tried my USB stereo instead, and they connect without issue but nothing comes through.
The audio connectors aren't on a seperate PCI card and just go straight into the mobo, also when I try and open up the mixer to see if something is muted (for whatever reason), it won't let me, saying "there are no active mixer devices available".
The audio drivers, including the USB audio device drivers are coming up as up to date and working fine, so what's the problem? is there any way I can get into my mixer and will I need to get a sound card to fix any problems?
I would have thought that the USB device would have worked fine even if it was an issue with the audio connecters as it seems to replace them and take the sound directly...?

I think the same thing happened me a couple of weeks ago. Still can't work out why it happened but here's how I fixed it.

Go to the Start Menu and select "Run...". Then type in "services.msc". Scroll down in the new windown that has opened until you find "Windows Audio". Right-click this and go to Properties. Make sure the Startup type is set to "Automatic" and that Service Status is set to "Started". Click OK and then try your audio again. If it doesn't work, try the old 'switch-it-off-switch-it-on-again' trick and first stop Windows Audio, then restart it. If that doesn't work for you, maybe someone else can help you.

If anyone could shed some light on why this happens, let us know
