If a few people could give me their opinion on this Id be grateful. Thanks.

I have a single room to rent out in my house in the Doneycarney area. I think a student would be ideal due to going home some weekends.
I live in the estates behind Kitty Kiernans . Is this too far for a student to go everyday and how much do you normally pay for your accomodation.
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

Ah, I live quite close to you.

No, its not too far. I know of people who walk further. As for price: Dont extort them.

It completely depends on the standard of the house really and the facilities it offers. If you post some more details about it then people might be able to give you a round figure. Things like is the room en suite, is there broadband access, NTL etc... are all important things to consider when gauging the price.

I do hope you're talking about the 20b and not the 103!

The room isint en suite but there is a bathroom downstairs that would be mostly theirs. I have both a single and double room and broadband connection with Smart...so whatever their latest load is. The house is lovely with open plan downstairs and a side and fromnt garden with patio. We added on an extension so the kitchen is big enough for 3 or 4 to knock around in.

Haha! I am. I wouldnt count the 103 as a service at all...more like a bus that occassionally can be seen in the area!

I see, well post some pics of it and some people who have rented rooms will be able to compare and tell you what they'd be willing to spend. Outside of that, you could trawl through daft.ie and see if you can see any comparable properties and their respective rents.

Suppose something around the €300 a month mark?

Does the 105 not go along that route? I know it only runs a couple of times a day (if even) but still ... *shrugs*

Having broadband for students is important id say. Well, for most students it is anyway.

The rooms on Daft etc are dearer than €300.00. I rang the DCU office and looked at their accommodation and its paid by the week not month. I honestly dont know.
A lady I know keeps students and they get their breakfast and eveing meal 4 nights a week and its €100.00 p/w. With a student in the house, the fridge will probably be plundered on a regular basis anyway so I might as well give them their dinner!

Im useless with cameras and uploading and all that so no pics Im afraid. :(

Ive never seen a 105 bus going through here.
I was thinking the house might be just as handy for a Trinity student as its a straight run into town.

Thanks for the replies. Heading in the right direction anyhow.

I have broadband in the house.

As a matter of interest...what makes the ideal student accommodation? Is there anything in particular that can make life easier and help them integrate into the house? Whats your wishlist?!

Ah, so you're thinking about a "Digs" type situation where you feed them et all? Hrm, well the type of people you will be getting for that will of course be different, as far as I can see they'll be far less high maintenance than you "average" student.

I assume this is a family home so? I was under the impression it was just a few working people with a spare room...don't know why though. :D

As for the other points, yes accomodation is broken down by week however most people prefer to pay per month or per semester so you might want to make this method open to them.

Ideal student accomodation? Hrm, thats a subjective... For me it would be a nice cosy room, a decent sized desk for my PC and storage for my other stuff. The sitting room should be nicely sized, comfortable and easily accessible. In your case the student should feel completely comfortable about using it at any time and shouldnt feel self concious when in there.

The same goes for the kitchen, it should also be organised so that everyones food is in its own place, that way people arent accusing others of using their food etc. The exception to this is general use items like bread, milk and sugar. These should be shared by all to keep costs down as theres no point in having multiple ones of these on the go at the same time.

Personally I'm used to my own bathroom in college but that mightn't be as big an issue for others who havn't become used to it.

Finally, I want to feel free to come and go as I want. This has always been something I've had against digs, it seems like you're merely a guest in someone elses home rather than a proper tenant. The student should feel at home when there and should be able to come and go as they please and also be able to bring people home when they want without feeling their pissing people off.

Oh yea, and I don't want to feel ripped off by what I'm paying either. Unfortunately I havn't a clue what Digs type accomodation costs, you may want to give the folks in DCU another buzz about this or maybe someone around here has some experience with it...

thanks Faceless Man. After reading your post I think Ill go for the student who does not require meals. I would have thought that the student who required meals would be more high maintanance?
The rooms are in excellent order and so is the house.
I would hope that anyone who would live with us would be comfortable. Its not a family home. Just me and him and we both work. Its not like im a 60 year old lady who is terrified about getting tea stains on the carpet!

The kitchen is huge so no worries there.

Thanks for your likes. Very helpful.

Well, not to make an sweeping generalisations here, but the majority of students who would be going into Digs accomodation are those who...hrm, mightn't be the wildest ever, if you know what I mean. Its seen as more of an extension of home and from what I can see from the people I know that are in Digs or were at some point, it just seems to attract a quieter type of student.

Outside that you'll have your typical student who will want to eat when they want to eat and come and go as they please. That to me is less high maintenance than someone who needs to be cooked for on a daily basis.

Ah that sounds grand so. If you're going to advertise on Daft then you'll definitly need pictures but outside of that drop DCU or Trinity a ring and get yourselves added to their list of outside accomodation. Other than that just lob a sheet on one or two of the notice boards in the colleges with your contact number and let them come to you.

Finally, rent wise, hrm, its just hard to say without seeing the place and I'm also not sure of the location but if its as close as people say and as nice as you say then you'd be looking at around €70 - €80 per week.

Best of luck with it anyway. :)

If your giving the student meals, then it would probably cost a €100 a week if your near the college. Since your a bit of a walk and no meals, I think something around 70 to 80 max a week (€300 a month) is fair enough. I've rented 3 houses in the area, not living in with the owner like your suggesting and the rent I paid was €275 for sharing a room, €360 and €290 for my own room, all within 5/10 minutes of the college. So around €300 I think is reasonable.

I live a 25 minute walk away from the college and am paying €300 a month excluding bills.
I think that broadband is always an added bonus worth paying a little extra for even if it is with a company that refuses its employees the opportunity to join a trade union.
I think that a figure in the region of €70 per week/€320 per month sounds reasonable enough but a rounder figure of €300 is more appealing for potential applicants.
