I know there's been some discussion on this but does anyone know the law regarding the use of seat belts in cars aged 1970 and back?

I believe you are only required to have the belts that were originally fitted to the car, if it is 30+ years. If there were never any belts - you're not legally required to have any (though you'd be mental not to fit a set).

I've a set of three pointers I'm waiting to fit to replace the original lap-belts.

Ask at your nearest NCT centre, when I got the Fiat tested in 2000, the original ineretia reel belts werent working . I rang the test centre to see if the car needed belts, and they could tell me what what the law regarding belts on cars of different ages was.
