Having to take a beating...

I was watching some “Senshido” stuff last night. At one point Richard Dimitri talks about the possibility of taking a “tactical beating” as a strategy to survive a very bad altercation.

    For example:
You are cornered by 7 guys (escape impossible), and a couple of them are carrying knives. One of the guys wants to give you a hiding to impress his mates. Do you guys think that if you fought back it would just escalate the situation? or do you think you should take the beating and hope they go away after a certain amount of damage is done?

Obviously this type of situation does not happen very often, I'm just examining a hypothetical scenario. So for the sake of the post lest assume it could happen - just to exercise the old grey matter.:)

    Cheers Bagg.

An awful lot a altercations are about proving to the rest of the 7 or so in the group that you are in fact hard enough to beat the piss out of whoever it is you have confronted. So yeah I think that taking a hiding would be better than taking out three of them and getting it ten times worse, it's all about damage minimisation.

    Hi Miles,

Yeah I think I'd do the same, even though there is a part of my Ego that would really want to retaliate. I'd probably feign more injury also – play dead if you will, and just hope they buggered off before it got too bad. I know there are no guarantees that they wouldn't just stick you in the first place. But I reckon if you knocked one guy out they would definitely want some real payback.

    Cheers,

    B.

I told this twice here before.
last year in Israel i got attacked by 5 or 6 thugs, out to cause harm and robb someone. attacker no 1. tried to slice my face open with a broke bottle...I disarmed him, and felled him, however I got jumped on and it all went to ground. the rest were trying to kick my head off my shoulders, so I cover and blocked kicks with elbows.

I survived the attack well (just a black eye and cut head), I disarmed the broken bottle, though I think I was whacked on the head with a bottle too. and I stopped them from kicking my brains out.

I had no chance to run as I was cornered, and punched in the face first before i knew what was happening. so they had the first strikes in, and i was defending when odds were against me.

I feel give then sheer violence of this mass attack with weapons, and 5 pr 6 thugs involved. I feel I did really well in defending myself.

Got attacked when 18 years old when I went to canada for university. I was real green back then. walking along,. 2 thugs set me up, talk to me and before i knew it, hit me punches...I hit one back a hard left hook. I was real scared. I ran down the road to escape. and 2 car loads followed me. cornered me, jumped on me, held me down, after whacking my head on the kerb, and they all kick the head off me. I was vert lucky. Long story short, reported it to cops...who did nothing (as usual), so I tracked down a few weeks later who it was myself, found out where they lived, and went back to cops and made them arrest and charge them. turned out they had records as long as your arm for violence and robbery and 2 were jailed. turns out years later, they are no longer in the world as their life style caught up with them. I do forgive them, looking back on it. that was a real scary situation, and even running did not save me.

So only thing you can do, is cover up "crazy monkey" , block what you can, and pray! usually!

I think it's called appeasment or something...? :D

That situation may be easily read too, who is advancing/talking/brandishing weapons, but IMO there is nothing to be said for "hit and hope" tactics in the above situation. Maybe the Homer I'm a haemophiliac / step on some necks / run like hell? In the same way it go,

Angry No 1 (of 7): "Gimme your wallet."
    You: "Okay."
Angry No 2 (of 7): "He's gettin smart with you!"
You: *Get an even bigger kicking*

The inability to tell the future is a harsh mistriss...

(Update: Millionaire: I posted this while you were writing and hence my input seems as though I'm trivialising your situation by saying it's easily read, I'm not. Sorry if it came across that way)

Great that in a situation like that you have a choice. Also, how do you know 2 guys have knives? Are the just brandishing them out in the open with no intent to use them? In general I just avoid (touch wood) inescapable situations.

By the way, do all you RBSD guys carry pepper spray?

    Peace

I found myself in a situation on Saturday night.

I was walking down O'Connell Street at about 3 in the morning with my girlfriend, while her sister and their friend (female) were walking behind us. My girlfriend turned around to see that the other 2 were keeping up and when she saw they'd stopped to ask for a light off 3 fellas, she walked back to them.

One of the lads started to put his arm around my girlfriend. I stood in between them and asked my girlfriend if everything was ok? This lad then asked me if this was my girlfriend to which I replied "yes". He said he was sorry and put his hand out for me to shake. Now

The SECOND LAST thing in the world I wanted to do was shake this lads hand

    but

The LAST thing in the world I wanted to do was rub him and his 2 mates up the wrong way. Plus, I think he was being as sound about it as he could have been.

I shook his hand and said it was cool and I realise he didn't know etc.

    Then things got weird!

I suddenly was very aware of the fact that I had a wall behind me and had 3 fellas standing VERY close to me talking to me in a different language (I'm not going to take a stab at what it was because I've no idea). One of them seemed to be getting very "excited". It seemed to me these lads were just about to hop off me. What was I gonna do? Under absolutely NO circurmstances was running and option! I couldn't leave the girls behind. I wasn't going to get the upper hand here either as these weren't small guys - I was at head height with one of them and looking up at the other 2. The "excited" fella I was talking about was looking more and more like he was going to let one fly but I just kept calmly saying "I'm sorry lads, I can't understand what you're saying". Then, the guy who had put his arm around my girlfriend turned to the aggro guy, told him to "leave it" in English, and the walked off.

To say I was releived is an understatement!

Maybe there's no point in posting this as I'm not really giving an opinion. I really don't know what I'd have done! I was just getting ready for the worst. Having the girls there with me SERIOUSLY limited my options.

Had they not been there, (well, besides the fact I'd wouldn't have been in the situation) I'd have played cool, dealt with what came my way and givin Linford Christy a run for his money.

no I never carried pepper spray nor any weapon on my person out and baout in my life, and I do not intend to in the future either. however when I lived in dublin I had a magahoney Dublin Mepropolitian Police (from before the gardai) under the bed...was my grandfathers who as a guard.

and here I have a little small but solid mag light beside the bed.

I have 2 good legs for running, and 2 good hands on me for striking if I cannot run!

Man I have to say that clip is sick, it really shows how quick this type of thing can happen. The attackers are to be sentenced next month, I really hope the get long sentences.
