    Hey!
I'm at present in a situation where by i can either buy a P4 3.20 Prescott or a AMD 64 3200+ 2.00Ghz Venice.Which off these given the choise would you buy and which would you leave behind. The P4 is a little more expencive but i'm told that the AMD is just asgood a CPU?

AMD64 would probably be better. Depends what you're doing though, you probably wouldn't notice it in everyday use.

The AMD64 would overclock more, if you're into that kind of thing.

    A64 personally.

First of all, what would you be using the CPU for ? If it's general productivity I'd say take the P4 for hyperthreading. Otherwise the A64.

well, if you're gonna go intel then i'm assuming you're going with socket 775. I suggest getting this baby. http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=318314 You can OC up to 4.2Ghz (4.0Ghz if you wanna play it safe) on air.

edit: its also cheaper than both of the processors you've mentioned. If you had to pick one of those, i'd go with the AMD, its only the new intel CPUs that have resparked my interest in Intel.

Oh Gourd, not another one who didn't actually *read* that THG article about the Pentium D 805 properly. For starters it only got up to 4.1GHz before crashing, and you need water cooling if you want to go over 3.8GHz with that, as the amount of heat it produces is ASTRONOMICAL to say the least.

This might be of use to you for comparing the processors for whatever particular use.

Id have to be honest and say that i'm building for the sole purpose of playing Battelfield 2 and the like, i'm not a gamer at all but this game looks pretty kool. After that its just genaral computer use.
    The P4 is a 478pga and the AMD is a 939

Well, for BF2 and most games, you'd be better off with the Athlon.

If its games then the A64 beats the Intel hands down, not only that but is uses less watage and produces less heat so you have the option to overclock which adds more longevity to the processors usage time before you need to upgrade for future games requirments.

Can we start banning people who took that THG article as gospel and think that the Pentium D is a guaranteed overclock ?

Agreed, its the same as the 2.8ghz 144/146 opteron. Possible but really just there for the challenge.

And the ones who bought a opty 144 for 3ghz guaranteed with the stock cooler:D

Get the Athlon 64 3200, And im not just saying that cause Im a AMD fanboy:D

Its cheaper, cooler, quiter, faster in gaming and most tasks, and the AMD system will have more upgrade options.....

If you were prepared to spend €220 on the P4 why not spend an extra €20 to get the athlon 64 3700 now that is a gaming CPU and a half;)

I'd go with the AMD meself.

Shame you haven't budgeted for a dual core. I could never go back to single core after being used to the dual core CPUs. (Especially when i've it clocked to FX-60 speeds :D)

But generally- when I was doing all my research back in November when I was upgrading AMD came up trumps again and again.

If the P4 is socket 478 then definately rule it out.
    3200+

    Hey!
First off tnks for the feedback on my OP, as a result i went ahead and bought the AMD and i have to say there is quiet a difference in overall proformance, more noticeable in video editing and in gameing. With the 939 i also bought a WinFast board 2gigs of 3200 400Mhz Ram an 80gig serial ATA with a 320gig IDE slave, got my 650w psu in the post today, now all i need would you belive is an ATX case to put them all into, there in a case but its just a temp setup. Also! would you belive i bought the prescott, well a part exchange, a 1.50/1Gig scandisk psp for the P4 and the serial ATA both have been used but i know them to be less than a year old and in pwo. Anyways tnks for the help, no doubt ill be running into trouble soon ....

You will have trouble If your PSU is what I think it is........

Did you buy it on ebay? Is it Qtec? is it "gold"

If so, throw it out and get a proper PSU:D

Thats freaky! yes it is a Q-Tek and yes it is Gold.
That said, its my second Q-Tek and the second 550W is still pumping out the Watts and never crashed as a result of power problems!

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

    Q-Tec don't make good PSU's iirc...

They tend not to be too well built and don't supply the most solid of current.

Hiper are another brand I'd avoid - but they sell like hotcakes for some reason.

Antec are reliable with good stable, clean current. There are other good makes too...

Q-Tec kill computers. It should be made into a sticky, or a popup window for anyone who browses to this forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭johnplayerblue

****! This is my second build from the ground up and the one i've put most cash into, to lose it to something as disposable as a PSU is not a tought i'd like to entertain. So as a result of the sound advice i'm gona change asap and spend the weekend looking for a kool case and an Antec PSU, just did a google and the feedback is good, pitty i didn't do this before i hit the place a bit tab on ebay.
Any one wana buy a barley used 650W PSU? (Not)

Throw that heap of junk in the bin, and avoid NorthQ as well because benchmarks I've seen show them to provide the most off-spec voltages. Depending on your budget, you might want to grab a Seasonic S12 500 or 600 Watt model power supply. Have the 430W model myself, provides a stable voltage that's pretty close to perfect spec.

Reading Komplett, a Tagan i-Xeye 420W also got good reviews.

    I used a Q-Tec on a.....600mhz p3. :D

It was fine lol but I wouldn't trust it with much else, they are definately not actually as bad as the myth its developed into, but they are best suited to general light use computers and not gaming ones.
