I've been stuck with the damn windows update shield with exclamation mark inside because MS in their wisdom have decided to push out a patch for flash player that only works on some PC's.

However since it wont install, I cant complete the windows update process so Im gettting said shield and also the nagging update your pc Textbubble.

Any ideas on how to remove it without disabling windows update?

Turn off windows update on your macine and then go to the website. http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us then disable that particualr flash update. It worked for me cant remember exactly how.

Ive had a couple of windows updates that wouldnt install, I had the updates check when there are patches available and then ask me. They wouldnt install for me so I turned off updates on my computer and went through the website and they worked just fine.

You can leave windows update on and not receive a particular update if you do the following.

When the yellow shield appears and tells you have updates to install bring it up but don't select the express install pick the custom option, you will see the update in question with a tick box next to it.

Un-tick it and then click on next/proceed it will give you some guff for not installing it and warning you about hiding this update but just proceed on anyway. After that it shouldn't prompt you with that update any more.

Alternatively delete the flash plugin in IE, and then go to Macromedias site and install it again and see if the patch is no longer needed or installs properly.

That advice worked perfectly for me - cheers. So simple!
