I'm headin to New York next weekend and was just wondering if anybody can suggest any good, cheap hostels to stay in for a few nights??

A quick glance at Hostelworld.com should be your first port of call - sort your results by user rating and then find the place that best suits your geography or price range. There's always a few gems on that site.

The Chelsea international hostel is cheap and well placed. Good atmosphere. The only issue that you might have with it is that it is in the gay district of Manhattan. That said, it's very easy to walk from there into any of the tourist areas around. Myself and a few friends on a J1 ended up in this hostel last year, and I'd much prefer to have been in our hostel to the one around 100th street. Another friend of mine was in that one and got to see his first gunshot victim.

    Chelsea International Hostel

Just make sure to ask for airconditioned room and you'll be fine.

EDIT: Just to clarify, it's not a 'gay' hostel, just in the gay district.

Try to book a place as soon as possible - availability is sketchy enough for next weekend - Jazz on the Park and the Wanderer's Inn are both pretty decent. The HI on Amsterdam (on 103rd I think, not too sure) is grand for a few days aswell, but I think it's totally booked out for next weekend.

As long as you get a place with air conditioning and that's close to the subway then you should be grand - you'll spend barely any time in the room anyway.

And beware some of the hostels are in "straight" areas, in case this might be an issue for you.
