Begruding ***hole

The following article comes from the Sunday People today, written by Patsy McGowan.
If you ever needed proof that we Irish are glory hunters you got it last Saturday when 70,000 half-pissed gobsh*ts from every corner of the country headed to Cardiff. They travelled by land, sea and magic carpet in the hope that the Munster team could give them a bit glory. The amazing thing about it when they were struggling through the earlier rounds of the competition they played to the third of the crowd.

I suppose when you have suffered as many set backs in sport as we have you have to grab any bit of glory that comes your way. To be honest I dont know what all the fuss is about - the game is only played in a few countries and very badly in most of them, yet you would have that thought we won the world cup in Germany. We made a balls of that little venture and didnt qualify and probably wont for a long time again, so I we are stuck with the rugby men now.

The spin off from this victory will be that it will drive another nail in soccer's coffin especially in Munster. If the Munster hurling and football team dont come up to scratch they will feel the pinch. But that's the way we are made - we only have time for winners. Now as you will have gathered by now I am not a fan of rugby and I cant understand the attraction of the game to those who follow it. I hear commentators talk about skill but I never see any.

    HIPPO's

The 80 minutes is a battle between 30 overweight hippos and brute force is the predominant factor. They say that rugby is a hooligans game played by gentleman - which is just as well because I dont think any of the games would finish if it was played by hooligans. I suppose we have to be thnakful for small mercies. So I will jump on the bandwagon and pretend to elated by their victory. You what they if you cant lick them join them.

Now as I said earlier we dont have a lot to shout about, but some of the newspapers went over board in their coverage, in fact one paper devoted a dozen pages to this earth moving event. This goes to show they didnt have a lot else to concentrate on or thought we were all idiots. For goodness sake it is only a game and there are more important things in life.

In case you think that all the clowns are in Munster, I was in a pub in Donegal and these two farmers who have never been to a rugby match or indeed any other sport in their lives were jumping up and down singing the fields of Athenry.

It was at that moment I realised what drink and sport have in common - the combination of both makes complete carried away idiots.

I am lost for words with this guys article, well maybe not I have two words for such drivel like this, he seems to be nothing but a Begrudging ***hole.

Please email this guy if you disagree with his smartarsed article, I have.

He's entitled to his opinion which, being in the Sunday People rag, probably would have gone completely unnoticed until you posted it here.
And I like how it was posted in Limerick City, as if it's the only part of Munster.
Realise that not everyone shares your views and move on.

I suppose Karoma, he really got me riled up though.

You're entitled to your opinion too, and feel free to share it with him. Just don't get too wrapped up in it.

He has an article in the Donegal Democrat every Thursday and I think it would be fair to say he is a bit controversial. As an ex. Finn Harps manager, he really lets rip when it comes to the Eircom League/FAI. That piece seemed mild compared to some of the stuff we get up here.

Its a rant (so familiar to anyone who posts here!) and as such can be dismissed.

    Mike.

Why give him the 'oxygen' of publicity? You are playing right into his hands. (I realise that, by responding to the post, I'm doing likewise).

"It's only a sport, there are more important things in life"

You sir, are a fool. Only earlier in the article he compares the elation and celebration to Ireland winning the soccer world cup...his sport (and mine btw...I am a big follower and supporter of both sports).

Somebody doesn’t like being out of the limelight and the fact that this man is a "journalist" is the most damning statement of all.

Write about real content whoever you are. A nobody in a wash of nobody papers...maybe being controversial makes up for your clear lack of journalistic skills, but unfortunately I’m too busy applauding my fellow country men winning a major sporting event from a sport that has given us our only glory in major sporting events of any note in recent years.

    Thanks billy! :D

I've seen Humphries write similar anti rugby drivel in the Irish Times....some people just have a chip on their shoulder. Meh.

Always remember opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one. It's just sad that some people are paid for their's when we could have been spared the aggro.

You hear a lot of it when the Irish team(soccer) aren't doing well and rugby is becoming more popular. I would go on a rant about soccer(why kick a ball to ten different people on ten different parts of a pitch, take it and boot it in the goal yourself,FFS) but I won't do that:D

I have to agree Dave, last week I was out celebrating the end of college and saw a load of the Munster lads in Trinity Rooms in Limerick, also got a chance to see the Heineken Cup which was sweet.

That's something I've wondered lately, what is the average wage of let's say Peter Stringer(minus sponserships). I know Brian "this product or service is the best thing ever and I fully endorse it, now where's my cheque" O'Driscoll is probably paid more than your average player.

    A few questions:

    1) Who the **** is Patsy McGowan?
    2) Who the **** reads the Sunday People?
    3) Why do you care what this nondescript little twerp writing in a nondescript newspaper thinks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,055 ✭✭✭suppafly

I agree with snickers man. I'd never heard of this fool until you posted it and when i saw which newspaper it was from i hardly paided it much attention. if you want to talk about a begruder. Talk about Brian O'Driscoll. There was an article in the Examiner, i think it was, about him not watching the match and generally sour grapes tbh. Very poor form from him, but its to be expected from a poncy git such as himself.

As several posters have already pointed out, if you read the Sunday People expect to be offended. There are some extremely poor 'journalists' making a living in every country, Ireland is no exception.

I'm more insulted by the fact that despite how terribly written that article is, that man is employed and i'm not.

    sad state of affairs... :P

I'd follow almost any sport that has Irish representation, and only really started to follow Rugby in the last 2 years. I guess the Rugby players are more accessible as they live and play here compaired to the overseas soccer players.

Rubbish. No doubt he'll pass on his congratualtions to the Munster players when he sees them but you may not have noticed there's a bit of a rivalry between the provinces. Have you played a team sport? Have you ever been beaten in a semi final? After putting in the effort to get that far only to lose could you give a monkey's who won the final? In his shoes I'd not have watched it either.

I agree. On Newstalk last night, Dennis Hickie admitted to not watching it either. Losing should hurt and watching mates on your other team achieving what you haven't should be painful to watch. If you care enough and IMHO the Leinster team do.
