Setting HD picture resolution

It's great to have access to the expert advice you get on this forum! So here goes..

The guy installing my Sky HD set the picture output to 1080i. The manual recommend leaving it on automatic.

From Fat-Tony's "review" I'm clear on most of the pros and cons of the two options. The downside I'm finding with the automatic setting is the blank screen effect when you change channel and it adjusts the resolution. Leaving it on 1080i solves that. I appreciate that it means that 4:3 is always stretched to 16:9 but that's fine as I have the TV picture format set to do that anyway.

My only concern is that I think I read that Sky's sports output will generally be 720p. My primary interest in HD is for the soccer. If broadcast is 720p and I have the box set to output 1080i, do I lose quality (and vice versa?). My set is a Toshiba 32WL56P with resolution of 1366x768.

    With a 1366 x 768 it doesn't matter much.
