Connecting pc to internet?

    Right folks,

I've borrowed a friends computer & want to use it to connect to the internet with my broadband connection. I've tried creating a new connection under the wizard on XP but no joy:(

Do I need some start-up cd for my NTL modem or something?

    Cheers!

Make a note of what the intenet connection settings are on your friends computer. Plug it into your Modem or if it is a modem/router into a spare port on the router. Then change the Internet Connection settings to the same as on your own computer. If it is a router then the Internet Connection Settings will be direct connection. If it is not a router then auto detect will probably work.

Yeah, my friends' pc was set for a dial-up connection as he lives in a rural area so I've selected "never dial a connection" and made his LAN settings identical to mine i.e. "automatically detect settings".

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to do the trick?:(

Are you connecting the laptop to a router or directly to the ntl modem?

I'm connecting a pc directly to my NTL modem.

You might need to clone the MAC address of the old PC. Although the newer modems will switch to a new MAC address after a power cycle.

Switch off modem. Disconnect any PC connected to it. Wait 10 mins. Restart modem. Wait for it to sync. Connect friend's laptop. See if that works.

I'm gonna try power-cycling the modem to see if that works. Thanks for the suggestion, btw it's not a laptop i'm trying to use, it's another pc;)
