I can no longer get my PC to boot fully. It gets as far as the windows is starting up page then re-starts.

Everytime it starts up it runs a file check and usually finds a few invalid or cross-linked files, "BOOTEX.LOG" and "DUMP****.tmp".

I don't think it is a hardware problem as I have successfully booted a HDD with an image of the same OS (It is badly corrupted in other ways so I can't use it).

It re-boots at the same point in safe mode also.

It is a rather ancient installation of XP Pro that was upgraded from Win98 a few years ago.

The PC has always been a bit unstable, it regularly freezes or spontaneously re-boots. It is not my main machine but I keep it going as it has a program on it that I cannot re-install easily on a fresh OS.

You may need to format that partition and re install. As for your program there is two ways of saving it.

    1. Use a program like Norton Ghost or Nerobackup to copy the program file folder.

    2. If you cant boot into it you could use xcopy and copy the program file to a removable disk or other harddisk in the computer.

Then reinstall windows, there could be an issue with some 98 drivers still being there. Have you checked msconfig?
