Do you use Sky by broadband to download content?

If you are a user of SKY by broadband to download movies etc. to your PC, please be aware that the service loads a peer-to-peer application (Kontiki) as part of the install process. This uses your PC and your broadband bandwidth to supply the movie you have just downloaded to other users of the service. This is all legal (apparently), but you are using YOUR bandwidth to help SKY to distribute its services. Have a look at the posting http://www.pcdoctor-guide.com/wordpress/?p=2452

I thought this was common knowledge?

I don't use the service myself and wasn't aware that folks were in the know - have access to the movies via subscription anyway. I thought it would be useful to warn people. Best not to have another "Sony" doing the rounds.

Sony had a copy protection scheme embedded on their CDs which loaded a rootkit onto user's PCs when they played them. Sony got into huge problems and eventually had to recall the CDs and re-imburse affected users. See Bruce Schneier's blog on the subject - http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/11/sonys_drm_rootk.html

I wasn't aware that Sky were installing a P2P service. I read the details carefully, and it doesn't say anything that might indicate they wer edoing this. Unfortunately, I skipped over the agreement, which has that one obscure and obfucated paragraph.

Anyway, I uninstalled it - it only took a couple of minutes to do so. Painless enough, if you know what you're looking for.
