    ok here goes,

a friend had media center 2005 on his laptop and which dually got infected with everything under the sun.

so i decided to re install windows. so i started by deleteing all the partitions.
after which i discovered that dell no longer ships cd's but instead includes a recovery partition (which i had just deleted)

so i *cough* acquired a copy of windows media center edition and installed it. however i am now at the point where i need to input his license key. which doesnt work it says invaild. so i entered one that i *acquired* and thought i would use a key changer later.

but now i am inwindows and i have tried a key changer but it still won't accept the new key.

does anyone know a way to get around this ? how are they keys authenticated (because i now have a backup of the I386 folder from the dell partition (which before you say it will no preform a propper installation))

i have obsoviously tired google etc .

First off is this copy "Legit"?

If so activation will be done by clicking activate in programs, if the key you used was "Valid" it will work.

On the other hand if its a *cough other serial. Im sure you can bypass this using a "patch" which you will find with google. Look harder!

the version i used to install is a dodgy version from the internet, but i had only intended using it until i changed the key using the activation wizard.

i have a legitimate key that i want to use however i can't enter it. as it keys saying invalid kay.

i think its something to do with that the key is an OEM key and the media used to install it was not oem.

You need to find an OEM version if you found that version on the internet im sure you can find one with Dell in the name.

    Or you could:

Just ring Dell! They will send out the recovery Discs free of charge. Failing that I have a spare Dell MCE recovery disk - where are you based?

It gets very messy using non OEM windows disks to revoer systems. OEMS are required by Microsoft to pre-activate their Windows OS.

i am based in dublin, i could pick the disk up from you if that suited. i have tried the dell route and they are not entertaining it. also you could ftp the disk to me if you don't mind leaving your connection running all night?
