can someone help me out here.

    Right 1st year economics today,

my average so far was 68 and that was for 40% of exam, the exam was worth 60.
If I got 29% in the exam, I failed the course, but can i sit it again in september as my total average for economics would be above 35%?
or do I have to repeat the whole year, can I appeal to someone to let me stay if that's the case?

First year as in BESS? you can repeat the exam anyway, to try and get to 35/40%. If you get 40% in the subject in total, or if it's your only 35% and you get a 2.1 in something else, you can get a compensatory pass and get through to 2nd year.

I think that's how it works anyway, but I'm open to correction.

    Your mathematics is incorrect.

    68 x 0.4 = 27.2
    29 x 0.6 = 17.4

    27.2 + 17.4 = 44.6% overall

Assuming you did get 29% in your exam, you've passed that course with a III. They might however make you repeat the exam itself since you didn't pass it.

Doubt you'd have to repeat - compensation in the worst case scenario, III in the best (although dude, how did you not notice that you got 44%?)

And I've always found that markers always mark exam papers a lot easier than you might imagine; they're not expecting essay standard answers, just that you answer the question asked. So maybe you did better than you think.

so it would be rare to be forced to sit teh year again?

If you fail summer exams, you do supplementals in September. If you fail the supplementals, you can take the year again at your own expense or leave. If you fail the year and the supplementals a second time, you have to leave the course and cannot do any other course in that faculty.

er, maybe have a look at the course course book and double check whether you have to pass each component seperately? i know myself i dont have to pass the exam and the coursework provided the total mark is a pass.
