The Story of Knock began on the 21st August 1879 when Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. The apparition was witnessed by fifteen people, young and old. From this miraculous occurrence Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognised Marian Shrine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knock_Shrine#Church_Commissions_of_inquiry An ecclesiastical Commission of inquiry was established by the Archbishop of Tuam, Most Rev. Dr. John MacHale. The Commissions final verdict was that the testimony of all the witnesses taken as a whole is trustworthy and satisfactory.
I think this is a bit bald. Its always worth pointing out that
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marian_apparitions A Marian apparition, if deemed genuine by Church authority, is treated as private revelation that may emphasize some facet of the received public revelation for a specific purpose, but it can never add anything new. At most the Church will confirm an apparition as worthy of belief, but belief is never required.
In other words, the Church do a bit of a balancing act because they know many Catholics regard this stuff as complete nonsense. Essentially, this idea of 'private revelation' amounts to them saying 'look, leave the people happy in their ignorance if it does you no harm'.

    Great news:
Pope Francis will officially recognise Knock Shrine as an International Marian and Eucharistic Shrine later this month.

The Pope will deliver a message via video link during mass on 19 March, which will be con-celebrated by Archbishop of Tuam Michael Neary and Parish Priest Fr Richard Gibbons.

Official recognition of the shrine follows Pope Francis' visit to Knock as part of the World Meeting of Families celebrations in 2018.

Last year, the Pontiff declared 2021 as the year of Saint Joseph.

The declaration bears significance for Knock Shrine due to an apparition in 1879 in which St Joseph appeared, together with Our Lady, St John the Evangelist, and the Lamb of God.

In a statement, Knock Shrine said the apparition scene has deep liturgical meaning, symbolic richness and has been the subject of theological study and contemplation for generations.

"Unique to the Apparition at Knock is the representation of the Eucharist as the risen Lord which appeared as the Lamb on the altar, standing before his Cross and surrounded by a host of angels".

It says this aspect of the Apparition was detailed by 15 witnesses on 21 August 1879.

Mod: Ex loco refugii, this is getting perilously close to a link dump. While I can see you might consider it says all it needs to, this is a discussion board and an indication of reactions to, or consequences of, or other opinion on your part would help the discussion flow. Thank you.

Fair enough, perhaps it is difficult for some to comprehend...

The shrine is being elevated to one of international significance - rather than just of local/national Irish significance. The Pope will be sending a message for the event on Friday.

In my opinion, this is "great news" as well as a significant honour for Ireland's famous Knock shrine, especially amid the gloom of Covid. Perhaps more, especially international visitors, will visit Knock as a result, when they are allowed - to spend some time at the international-grade apparition site.

A bit off topic, but wouldn't it be nice if local artists and craftspeople could be encouraged to produce more thoughtful and inspiring mementos and gifts than the plastic stuff that is sold everywhere.

Yes, there is a lot of tat. Generally the "official" shops have decent stuff. That said, when I was in Rome there was a lot of decent stuff to be had.
