Contract not awarded letter or call?

Maybe this is slightly OT to the forum but I was wondering how best
to break decision to builders who quoted us for a house build that
they were not successful in getting the contract ?

I guess my options are to phone the guy (who was dead decent
and gave a competitive quote but was pipped by another more
experienced builder) or just maybe send a short letter thanking
him for his efforts in providing a quote and to let him know we
have decided to opt for a different builder on our shortlist.

Now that I've written it down... I think the letter looks like
the better option. Too much scope for unecessary discussion
and lack of closure if I phone him up on the matter.

Include a nice "thank you" and tell him it was the toss of a coin that decided it.

Call him up to the site and tell him to get back into his 06 BMW X5 and get the hell off your site, you wouldnt give him the job if he was the last contractor on earth. Then throw stones at him as he drives away, jump up and down and spit on the ground.

Or you could just go with Muffler - its up to you.:)

Send him the letter and thank him for his quote and the time he took to put it together. Also, tell him you would consider using his services in future
