Adjusting your raise based on limpers

I read somewhere (possibly here on boards) that you should think about adjusting your raise based on the number of limpers you have in front of you. Say, you get TT on the button. It's folded around to you, you should probably only raise 2-4BBs just to get some interest from the blinds. However, if the other 6 players at the table limp first, it was suggested to increase to 6-8BBs just to drive them out.

My feeling on this is that while you drive out a lot of the drawing hands, the only people who will probably call you will be those with hands that can beat you (AA-JJ, AK-T, say) and any high flop could kill you. On the other side, if everybody was trying to limp in with marginal hands, they'll all drop and you'll only get say 8BBs for your trouble (still better than bust)

So is it a flawed concept - does anybody adjust their planned upwards based on how many limpers there are?

Of course you have to, and you should never raise 2xBB unless you are trying to annoy people :)

What is wrong with 8BB's? In an average tourney this will increase your stack by quite a bit. It is not like a hand like TT is invincible.

With a hand like TT I would be happy enough to take down a pot with 6-8 BB's. The worst thing you can do is raise small and give anyone drawing the value to make the call in this position.

I've been using Nickys rule of thumb for about 2 years and it seems to work nicely, 3 x BB (standard) and add one BB per limper...simple but effective
