Has there been a spate in non-use of validators on the buses recently? I just saw the rather aggresively coloured label that's appeared on all the validators recently reminding you to put it into the machine.

And does anyone know if the little black/silver box above the validator is a Smart Card Reader?

I've seen it happen too many times: Idiot waves the card in front of the driver, adding the the Q pointlessly... Presumably, it's going to get worse with summer + tourists...

Nothing recent about it, seems some people never manage to grasp the simplest concepts.

Yes, it is. The pad on top of the ticket machine facing passengers is also a smart card reader.

All we need now is the actual smart cards. I don't know if DB are going to offer bus only smart card products ahead of the indefinitely delayed integrated card. There was some noise about it a while ago but I haven't heard anything recently.

There is also the matter that DB want to make sure that every passenger gets counted, as an indicator to government that they are delivering.

I think the drivers entered something into a key pad when I was using buses in LA the other week (was $14 for a weekly Metro Rail/bus pass btw).

yep, on the new TGX machines the driver has to hit a button for the 'non-validator' cards such as the elderly have.

the button was definitely on the old wayfarer 2 machine but i never saw any driver using it.

I wonder if passes will be moved to swipe cards?

I have seen them being used, but only for passees, not tickets.

    That would make sense.
    ...It'll never happen.
