    Hi All,

I have recently acquired a bust Inspiron Dell laptop. I was told when I replace the HDD it will be fine as it was diagnosed as having HDD fatigue in the repair shop. How do I know which drives will fit/are compatible? Who would you recommend as the cheapest place to supply a HDD - outside Dublin (Cork) so delivery probably needed.

    Cheers!

Any 2.5" IDE disk should do the trick. www.komplett.ie or www.elara.ie would be good places to look. Just check the model specs for the laptop to make sure it supports the size of disk you're buying, but it should be OK.

Thanks what does IDE mean I don't see any of these laptop hard drives on Elara listed as IDE?

    http://www.elara.ie/products/harddisklaptop.asp

They have some listed alright on Komplett. Any particular makes people would recommend/steer clear from?

    40GB should do me.

I installed the new Samsung 40GB HDD in my Dell Inspiron however the internal CD Drive has failed a while back and I have an external DVD drive. That doesn't seem to register though. I got a Win98 floppy boot disk from a friend and formatted & partitioned my new drive. However I still cannot get it to boot. Without the floppy I get Operating System Missing. What should I do? How do I install an operating system without an internal optical drive? I did pitch to my friends that I could swap my new disk into one of their machines to install the OS but unsurprisingly they weren't too keen to let me take MORE machines apart ;)
