Overclocking

I've been bad and posted this in the graphics forum, but seems as no one really checks there I though I'd post it here also. Hope I'm not causing to much trouble!

OK, I just receive oblivion today, and I had a little go before I had to get back to some work. It seems to play fine when I'm indoors, but i think my 6600gt will struggle a bit when I get outside.

My card comes with a v-tuner (I assume most come with a similar programme) that allows me to change core and memory clock speeds. Currently, they are set to 500 Mhz (600 max 270 min) and 1000 Mhz (2000 max 970 min). I dont really understand what the function of either of these are and what difference it will make if I tamper with them. I have put them up to max before (different game), only for the computer to crash.

    Advice/enlightenment appreciated.
    Thanks

    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2GHz) - no OC
    1gig ram
    6600gt 128mb

Grab this registry tweak and run it. IT enables Coolbits in the nvidia driver control panel. http://homepage.ntlworld.ie/demonofthefall/CoolBits.reg

Go into the nvidia control panel.
There will be a new addition to the menu on the left hand side; "Clock Frequency Settings"
Go in there, select manual overclocking.
Select the Performance (3d) radio button.
    Click detect optimal frequencies.
Let it run for a while till it decides what a good set of frequencies for you are.
Check the "apply these settings at startup" box.
    Apply, and exit.

There, all set up with a nice easy overclock.
Coolbits is the handiest because with very little effort you can find a reasonably good set of frequencies and know that they've been tested before you apply them.

I have an almost identical system to you.....except watercooled including the 6600gt.
The stock fan and heatsink on most 6600gt's are pretty poor....what manufacturer is your card?
The best I can get my 6600gt to OC is 542/1124 stable...bear in mind this is with watercooling and ramsinks...the GPU core never gets above 42c loaded whereas with the stock fan it used to idle at 64c.

    Just my two cents :)
