Right ive sold all my equipment except for my guitar and I have a grand to spend on an amp. I only need a decent combo(all tube of course). A head and cabinet halfstack is more power than I need. Although if they usually sound better I might go that way. I was trying a marshall ts601 in musicmaker the other day and it was damn nice. It was damn expensive too. Over 1000. Ive tried ebay. Ive seen some really nice jcm800 heads 2204 models in partucular go for just under a grand. But you would need a cabinet on top of those and who knows what sort of condition there in with tubes etc. Anyone got any suggestions?

I was gonna go for a tsl602 but I went for an Engl Screamer 50w tube amp instead and I'm so glad I did. Puts the tsl to shame. Seriously good amp for its price compared to others in the same price bracket

Now for some good and sad news.... I might be selling mine. I have it about 3/4 weeks, its hardly been used and I have the Z5 pedal to go with it (165euro). Reason is that I just moved out of the house (into the back garden. lol) into a log cabin thingy and its too loud out here (already had the police down a few months ago. :o ). It was fine inside the house but I'll have to get something smaller now

    Total cost from Thomann: €1216

If you want to come check it out I'll prob let it go for €1100

I honestly dont think you'll find a better amp at this price. A lot of people here can vouch for just how good these are. Would prefer a quickish sale so let me know :)

Two reviews there but its the same amp. 9.6/9.7 overall

Can pick up a second hand tsl combo for around 600-800. I actually know a lad selling a 2x12 version for around that i think

To Gstormcrow: that sounds like a good deal. Does it have sounds like the marshall. I always have an image in my head of Engl and heavy Metal. Thats hilarious moving into the back garden lol. I bet you get a lot of grief over that! :D To Se046: Do you know where he is selling it? Id very interested at that price range.

Yeah I was looking at a second hand tsl as well but I found the Engl was a lot better. Well worth the extra money and I felt better buying a new amp so wouldnt have to worry about the condition of the tubes. As for the whole heavy metal thing, yes it can do heavy metal but its not what I bought it for. I'm a classic rock person myself and it has such a good distortion/overdrive that it is suitable and very versatile for any kind of music really. And the cleans are top notch too. Not to mention the fantastic reverb on it. I think I prefered the engl in every department compared to the marshall. Can do everything from sparkly cleans, to dirty blues, to classic rock to heavy metal. It's also fitted with a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker which is fantastic, especially compared to those Wolverine speakers fitted in the tsl's

Its an amp I bought with the intention of never needing to upgrade to a better amp since it has everything I want and its all really as good as it gets without going way above price limits. Unfortunately I hadnt forseen my mother wanting a spare guest room in the house and kicking me out the back into the shed. lol ;)

Im in the middle of exams at the moment so I dont have a spare minute. But I like the sound of that. I might drop by your garden to try it out next week, at low volumes of course ha ha.:D

Ah if you're interested in taking it you can crank away (to an extent. lol ). Yeah I've my last exam out in DCU tomorrow so anytime after tomorrow is grand. What guitar you got btw?

If a JCM800 is a tone you like (and if so, kudos, come join us;)), you can pick up 50Watt comboes at nifty prices on eBay. I'll be doing so myself after this summer when I gets me some work. (Hopefully)

Instrumental would turn anybody off an amp.
    They're arsebuckets.

I thought MusicMaker was dreary but JEEZ!

indeed it was probably a marshall MG20 hidden round the back of the cab cause they didin't want to waste the tubes ;):D

What Engl was it you tried anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,355 ✭✭✭punchdrunk

can't remember but it was about a grand and had a million pots/switches on the front,he said the clean sound was better than a twin....
    ...it clearly wasn't

Hmm... That doesn't ring a bell. The only Engl I know of with a million pots and switches costs well over 2 grand.

Besides, and clot knows Engl are heralded for their high Gain sounds, not the cleans. Although with that said, I was quite happy with the cleans on the Fireball.

i honestly can't remember but it was deffo about that price cause thats what i had to spend on a twin,my marshall only has six pots on the front and one i don't ever use so any two/three channel amp is like nasa to me! :D

strangely i have about 30 pedals though...

get an engl neo for the kinda sound that u use it would suit perfect and if the time came that u wanted to change your style i would say its more versatile than any marshall or fender...keep away from modelling amps whatever u do...

get an engl screamer for 300 off thomann sure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Eoin Madsen

I'd have to say the Engls don't really do much for me either. Better than a TSL or DSL, but that's not saying a hell of a lot imo.

I'll second the JCM800 suggestion. Just don't go with a reissue, unless you're planning on changing out the OT. :)
