    Jeeeesssus H Christ...

How dow do I deal with this issue?

I had a load of work saved in work and one of my colleagues comes over and tells me that he deleted it and that its MY OWN fault because I didn't have it saved....eh hello? I had it saved to the folder you deleted!

Anyways he walked off and made quite the scene infront of the boss about me not saving my work....

I will now have to go back and do all the work again (3 days worth) because of this.

I can't complain to boss and they are best pals and whatever I say I will be made to look a fool.... Didn't challange him when it happened as was so shocked by his psychotic reasoning!

What do I do to sort this tw@t out, this is just one incident in a long list from this guy......

Your company needs a new backup strategy if it's possible to lose 3 days work.

how can you not have saved 3 days work?
do you leave your puter on at night?
what if you had a power cut? I tend to save automatically as I go along, so if I do loose something, it's only a few mins work.

oh and yes, he's a pure wanker and I'd have lost it there and then whither the boss was watching or not.

Why not delete his work and make a scene about its all his fault you deleted it.. thats what i'd do.

Or you could ofcourse download a free recovery utility, recover the file and kick your heals up for the next 3 days while you 'redo' all the lost work.

    oops
didn't read the thread right :o

Then it's a case of not having a password on you puter when you're not sitting at your desk?
I don't care if they are friends, I'd still go to your boss and have a word. If it's 3 days work, there is no way you couldn't have saved it then, surely he'll understand that

Should have been clearer but was typing post in blind rage

I saved my work to one of the servers as per normal. and I haven't touched it in 6 months as the work was done and dusted.

We use a particular system for backup and recovery, these files where not part of that as nobody but me touches them, not to go into too much detail they where hugely important and too large to have on my puter.

So bloke comes along and copies WHOLE folder to his computer (we are suppose to work off server) and then deletes my stuff out of it of it. When he is done he then over writes server folder with his folder, wham my work is gone

    SHHHIIITE!

Am very seriously pisssed off about this. Would be fine if he said I am so sorry I didn't mean it, but the fact that he made it look like my fault when he was working locally!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,382 ✭✭✭petes

He actually cut and paste from the server? Idiot. If you are the only one that is supposed to use these files why was he using them?

/edit just re read. You use the same folder as him?

    I'd go to the boss.

Yeah go to your boss and explain the situation.

If he doesn't take you seriously then you'll have to take it to a higher power.

And surely they've got some sort of back up??

The fact that he went straight into the boss makes him a complete A hole!!!

Edit: just read your second post, guy is a fcuking d!ck who obviously feels inferior to you so he resorts to petty acts of stupidity!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,392 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

first rule...don't allow full access to the server files period.

wtf was he doing with the ability to cut and paste from the sever to being with?

I know it's a bit late now but for future reference, it should be looked at.

Fact that he went straight to the boss makes me think he knows he was in the worng and preempting things...

I'd play innocent. Go to boss and say "here's what happened.... yada yada yada.... Am I at fault or is collegue?" Just to see where the boss stands on the issue.

If they say yes, ask why and put your case forward. If you still fell a grievence take ti to a higher power. If they say no, make a formal complaint about the collegue. The fact that boss and collegue are friends should NOT affect the situation if your boss is in any way professional.

If the boss is incapable of acting professionally, complain about BOTH to the next level of authority.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I know that when that happened here by accident they were able to go back to the day before and recover all the lost files from the previous day.

Maybe your IT guys can do that ?

How do you know the folder wasn't backed up? It was a network share why would an admin exclude a network share from a backup? Particularly if it's just excel/word/Access files. If your company is using standard backup procedures they should have a backup of your files be it from the end of last month or yesterday. As for the problem with your work colleauge try being a bit more assertive. If he's at fault make your case and go to your manager, friends or not he should be professional and deal with the issue. If he doesn't I'd consider moving on.

    Don't think about this...kick his arse!!

Hi folks. Thanks for your replies.

Yes he removed the folder from the server to work locally (tw@t!)

At the end of the day, had he come to me and said I am really sorry but I overwrote your files and offered to try and restore I'd have said ok accidents happen. (I have since found my own back ups so its no longer the issue).

The issue is that he announced to the whole office that he had deleted the files and that it was MY fault that they hadn't been saved, like I said, they where saved to the folder he deleted. He went on about how I should have a better system in place like it was ME who had deleted them!

Anyways, I was livid and couldn't say anything back! My boss isn't the technical sort so he would only understand that "she didn't save them" and take that as gospel.

Like I said this is the latest in a long line of issues with this idiot. He is very pally with the boss, the company is his life and he is feeling very threaten that I am getting friendly with boss also (we have a great working relationship and have a laugh)

I think in his jealousy, he is trying to force me out. I am very stressed out this evening and feeling ill. Don't know what to do :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,964 ✭✭✭✭tk123

Ah don't be stressed - this happens where I work all the time(i get the call to get the stuff back:D)!! Tell the boss but not in a giving out way - bosses like to think they had ideas so they can show off. I'd go with something like "Hi boss just so you know X deleted a bunch of files from the server but it's ok because I had backups, we would have been in trouble if I didnt thou so do you think we could ask IT to include the folder in the backup regime in case X does it again?" This way the boss gets to look good when he tells his boss he was the one who told IT to back up stuff! ;) I'm not sure how to deal with the guy thou - my boss is cool so I could just go and tell him what happend and he'd take care of it - you can either tell your boss that you're not happy about how the other guy handled the situation or get revenge on him? If you're going for revenge the classic "I am gay" email sent to the office from his pc would probably do the trick! :D

Listen, say it to your boss and if he turns you away saying pish posh, then you have to decide if it's a company you want to remain in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭dixiefly

This guy sounds like a dickhead and a bully. One thing to note is that the chances are that others in the office / work have also had their run ins with him and reckon he is a dickhead also.
Tell some other colleagues your side of the story. They may have had their problems with him also. They may be able to help you through this and they may be able to shed some light on the relationship between him and your boss.

One thing to note.....dont let it upset you too much. I get wound up sometimes about work and it's difficult not to but I try to put it into perspective in comparison to how things could be worse to the extent that this wouldnt register on the scale. Talk to the boss at an appropriate time.
Also, Hold your fire until you can really really nail him. They say that revenge is a dish best served cold. I would be interested in how you fare out.

TK123's idea is spot on. You don't want to get into a situation where the boss has to choose between you and his buddy - and if you put him in that position you will end up looking like the trouble maker.
As I have learned the hard way, go to your boss with solutions - not problems especially if you're a female.
Make sure to tell the other guy that you have backups and always backup your work - you'll get the point accross.
Don't put anyone in the position of taking sides.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

Take your newly found backup and restore it to its original folder thus overwriting the files he's put there, after all he complained about you not having a backup in place so he can't moan if you do have one and restoring it cost's him his files...after all he's SURELY backed them up :D

There's a guy in my job who has a habit of overstepping his authority and trying to hang people in front of the boss but once you stand up to him, he backs down sharpish..this pr1ck is trying to undermine you and seeing if you'll let him, put it up to him

Don't forgot to lock the access on the files so he can't do it again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 779 ✭✭✭homeOwner

It wouldnt hurt also to check with the server admin guys who do the backups and find out why the folders you are working in arent being backed up. If the files are as important as they seem to be, then they should be part of the normal backup process. (there could be a valid reason why they are not being but its worth asking).

Another point is that if you know you are working with files that are not being backed up, it would be prudent to keep a copy of them yourself somewhere, gzip them if they are that big and if they are too big for you to keep them somewhere else, then mores the reason for asking admin guys to back them up.

Get your manager on the job if the admin guys wont help....its your manager's job to make sure that your work is protected. I have managed people in the past and if someone lost 3 days work because a file was deleted, I would be embarassed for that to be known as it would look like I wasnt on top of what was going on on my team.

Dont take any jip from yer man, he sounds like a complete w@nker

Forget about the situation, but put something in place to prevent it happening again, is possible.
Form varies, class remains ...... a horse racing saying that applies to many situations.
Just express your disapproval mildly to the boss and let it drop. The fool will have another "accident" in another area and it will be remembered. Its a bit like when some moron cuts you up in traffic. Don't chase, you could put yourself in danger. He will have an accident later.
You just keep working away, doing a good job.
