Should my Exchange 2003 server be a DNS server?

I have a Windows 2000 server with Exchange 2003. I have DNS running on two other server, my PDC and BDC. Would having DNS running on my Exchange server be beneficial?

    Cheers

It would make no difference. DNS doesn't use much resources anyway - it's only a reference table. The server its on just needs to be referenced in DHCP. Our DNS server is in Chicago as an example and there's no problem.

Why would you want it on the Exchange server anyway? Exchange doesn't use DNS except to talk to other servers for file backups that you might have scheduled. MS recommend that nothing goes on an Exchange server so I'd say leave it where it is.

This would probably be better in the Windows forum btw.

As Macros said it probably wouldn't make a whole lot of difference. As long as your other DNS servers are reliable you shouldn't need to run DNS on the exchange box. It is possible to install Exchange onto a domain controller but from what I remember it'll only use the local DC for directory lookups so you'll lose out on load balancing with the other domain controllers on the network...this might have changed but it's been a while since I've done anything with Exchange so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    Cheers
