We have 2 cars at the moment and want to get rid and just have the one.

We have a '97 Mazda 626 in pretty good condition! And a Fiesta '96, great engine!

Any advice please on our best option... sell privately one or both?

    Trade in one or both?

    What would you do???

If it's "2 into another one", sell both privately.

Regardless of condition, you'll get peanuts in part-ex considering their respective age (they're in good nick and not in 'scrappable' condition, but old - at a guess, you'lll only get marginally higher value from a dealer than when they run these "€-for-scrap" offers).

Whereas you could push it on the private side and get those few extra bobs.

This is especially relevant as SSIAs are nearing, dealers are rubbing their €-grubby hands and they already know they're going to get cluttered with part-ex cars in the process (which will probably be more recent than yours).

EDIT- Oh, and the Missus and I did that too some years back in the UK (sold Hyundai SEi S-Coupe privately + part-ex'd Brava SX 1.6) and grabbed the occasion to 'treat ourselves' before we got in a family way ;) If you're in that situation, do it now ('treat yourselves'), else you never will :)

Thanks for that, yeah, we're selling both and getting something to "share"! Have to wait and see how that goes!!!

Sold our 96 Fiesta recently to a dealer near Portlaoise who specialises in small cars (Fiestas, Micras, etc). He saw my advert in B&S, might be worth trying it.

You need first to agree your objective - do you want a big car or a small car? Short journies, long journies, what age? What value would you put into a car? If you're happy with what you have, just want one fewer, then sell one. The Fiesta will probably go more easily, maybe make nearly as much.

I would try selling both privately.

The Fiesta will no doubt be the easiest to sell as it is perfect for a first time learner driver. It will be cheap to tax and fill at the pump. Plus the Fiesta is a tough little car and perfect for learning to drive in.

The Mazda 626 will probably be more difficult to sell as it is at least a 1.8 or 2.0 litre car and will not be worth much at that age. It might take longer to sell but they are very reliable so it will appeal to someone looking for a cheap reliable large family car. To a dealer this car will probably be a burden as a trade-in so you would more than likely only get a token trade-in allowance from them for it. If buying new you may be allowed scrappage allowance on it.

Try advertising both of them on some place like Buy and Sell, see how you get on.

what'd the difference between a scrappage allowance and a token trade in?

Not all dealers are offering a scrappage allowance especially if the OP is buying used again.

A small independant dealer may allow a couple of hundred euros extra for it as a trade-in if they are eager for the business.

scrappage allowance is just a way of heavily discounting cars that aren't selling well.

for example Nissan are offering €3000 scrappage against Almeras and Primeras. I know for a fact that if you walked in off the street without a trade in, they'd give you €3,000 off.

Getting the most money for your trade in shouldn't decide which car you buy, and scrappage deals aren't some magical way of getting one over on a dealer
