I got my exhaust welded around the manifold last week. The bike started fine down in the mechanics but on my way home i started to notice the bike revving very low.

anyways the bike cut out just as i was pulling up into my driveway and it hasnt started since. ive tried running with the bike and popping the clutch but that isnt working either. could the mechancis have fu*ked up the electrics when he was welding it or something? any help much appreciated.

you should have turned around and brought it straight back to him .
anyway's i'll guess that your bike is 2stroke , if you what try a quick fix that might work .
get a small bloke of wood and tap along the bottom of the exhaust and loosen up what carbon thats there , if you heard alot of grit rattling around that's more likely it and then try and start it again .
plus if you want to take off the exhaust alltogether or just disconnect it from the head if it start's and rev's freely then you'll know that's your problem for sure .

I feel your pain. Is the starter motor turning, or just clicking? Make sure the kill switch is ok too - Maybe the wire has gotten dislodged in it. The varadero is a 4 stroke by the way anto.

CDI's ( the electronic unit that controls the ignition) can get damaged by welding, it along with the regulator/rectifier should have been disconnected when the welding was being done.
Explain more what you mean by "but on my way home i started to notice the bike revving very low."

Stupid question: Do you have petrol in the tank?

    (Hey, gotta check everything)

That and make sure there is no cracks or holes along the exhausts. As they may have cracked on the way home and aren't giving enough back pressure. Other than that... make sure there is fuel in the tank (as Seamus said). He may have emptied it while welding for safty.

...that's not quite right........on two stroke bikes, certainly, but 4-strokes don't rely on that, not least on 125's..........

...ha! good one, nothing like the obvious !!! Don't know about Varadero's - have they got a fuel tap? Is it 'on' ?

They have a fuel tap. It's hidden behind the left-hand fairing, but there's a switch that pokes out (and a handy sticker that tells you which way to turn it).

Holes in the exhaust won't stop the bike from starting, and a previous post about carbon in the pipe stopping it is v unlikely (it would lead to a gradual degradation over time particulary in the top end - it will feel like the bike won't rev out, not a sudden failure as here.)

First off, have you a spark at the plugs?

was the weld around or along your exhaust if it was around your mech could have just sealed it almost shut and the carbon that would have been dislodged the exhaust was takin off and that blocked it and that would smother the reaction from the spark (the same as putting your hand up and blocking the exhaust to check for holes)

Cheers for all the help lads. :) Turned out it was a comination of things. Firstly the exhaust was FULL of weld. And when I say full i mean full, you couldnt fit your baby finger in between all the weld. Also, he f*cked the battery up. He mustnt have disconnected it or something when he was welding. ABSOLUTE IDOT.
