Thailand, Visa query

I'm off to thailand with a mate on June 2nd it looks like. It's very last minute and I'm going with him due to other people dropping out. I've got my shots and flights won't be a problem but it's the visa that could be a problem. We're going for 6 weeks but don't have visas yet. I looked on the consulate site and it says you have to apply 3-4 weeks before travel. Has anyone had expierience with this? Is it possible to go in there maybe? I need advice on this :)

i was in Thailand at the start of the year , and no visa was required - got a 4 week visa on entry to Thailand - pretty standard. To extend the visa you have to leave country , go to Malayasia or Burma or somewhere close , and when you re-enter Thailand they give you another 4 weeks , think its about 60 euros. To check if anything has changed call Trailfinders , they know there stuff.

I think you should be alright at 6 weeks, once you don't plan to leave Thailand (other than returning home of course). I was there with my missus for 4 weeks last year, and didn't apply for any visa. When you get to Bangkok, you fill out a tourist visa form, state how long you intended to stay (I think the max you can stay is about than 6 weeks), and off you go.

One thing that you really need to be careful of is your Exit Visa. This is a 1000 baht (about 20 euro) charge to your given when it comes to going home. If you can't pay, they will not, under any circumstances, let you on the plane.

Lovely country... people are a bit suspect though.

Really? Hmmmm, do they not ask to see your ticket when you arrive and if it' sover 4 weeks not let you in?

I don't remember being asked for my plane ticket, only my passport. It was over a year ago though, so i could be wrong. If it turns out that you can only stay for 4 weeks, apply for an extended visa when your in bangkok. They are cheap enough, and easy to get. Only thing is they take around 3 days or so to sort out.

Hmmm good idea, so I can go there and apply there? Even though I don't have a visa? I'll ring the consulate in the morning and see what they think, although they'll probably give me a by the book answer...

i was there last year, they dont ask to see tickets.

the best thing to do is a visa run to burma/malaysia. all the travel shops do them. just dont go to a place that says they will take your passport and renew it for you, these are stamped with a fake stamp and you'll be caught in the airport!

i went for 6 weeks, and never renewed my visa. had to pay a €40 fine in tha airport.

Yeah, you can apply while in Bangkok. We hooked up with some Swedish heads while we were there who needed an extended visa, and they got it sorted out no trouble. Only to thing to remember is, don't part with your passport to anybody! Even officals.

Or you can just do that... :)

People staying over their visit limit is ot really a big deal once you pay the fine.

You'll have no problems, once you arrive, you'll get a Visa on arrival. When you get towards the month stage, make your way South, towards Hat Yai. Stay there a night or two, hop over the border to Malaysia, and I would recommend taking the International Express from Hat Yai to Penang. Spend 72 hours there and hop back in on the return trip and head back.

    Burma/Myanmar was/is slightly dodgy.

Oh, before you leave, keep 500 Baht handy for the exit tax.

Koh Tao, Koh Samui (for a littel while. It's really touristy) and Koh Phangan are well really worth a visit. If you wanna learn to scuba dive... Kao Tao is one of the best places in the world I believe. Although... don't expect to get it cheap.

I spent 2 of my 4 weeks on Koh Phangan, and highly recommend it. There are some truely amazing beachs there. Especially on the north of the island. The Full Moon party's are really over-rated.. you'll probably end up at parties that are much better during your trip. Keep an eye for Half Moon parties, Black Moon parties, and my personal favorite... Jungle parties! (Jungle as in the location, not the music style) :)

    Have a great trip!

What sorta prices are we talkign about for diving do you know? reckon I have time to get my PADI? I'll be with someone else and have to take where and what he wants to do into consideration too so not sure how long I'll have. I also wouldn't mind rock climbing, but don't have much expierience...
Will go to as many parties as we can....heard about the half moon ones yeah :)

Well I'm off tomorrow! There were a few complications but It's all sorted now. Thanks for all the advice guys, appreciate it. Just one more question. Can someone advise me on money please, I've credited my credit card with all my spending money (sound good?) which I will take out when needed. Is it just in the banks where I'll exchange it or is there a different way?
