    Hey

Hope this is the right forum if not can the mods move / delete

Having trouble connecting to the net

Using a BT Voyager 2100 wireless router running on windows xp2

I am using Zonealarm pro and Bit Defender

The icons in the bottom left corner show that its connected and network is available
yet when I click on firefox cannot connect when 5 minutes previously it was working fine

Its not to do with Zonealarm as I turned this off and still no connection???

    Same thing when I reboot

I have gone into the configuration settings and done a diagnostic check and it fails
    the pinging option

When I go into the command prompt and ping 192.168.1.1 it seems to work as the firewall picks it up

I also have my login and p/w in but when I click connect still nothing???

Also when I do an ipconfig /all what should I be looking for?

The protocol settings are set to set as the defaults

Anyone got any ideas as with Utv and kept waiting everytime I ring them

    Thanks

Well since you can ping as far as the router then then only thing I can suggest is try pinging UTV's DNS servers. You could try to set the DNS servers manually too. I had a problem like that before (with BT Ireland though, not UTV) and I needed to set them in the network card's TCP/IP properties before I could access the Internet. You should be able to get the DNS server address from the UTV site.

    Hi

Cheers its more of an annoyance as one minute its working fine
and the caput not a kick

How did you work around it and does it still happen ?

    Utv DNS servers are below

    Primary:- 195.218.116.2
    Secondary:- 194.46.8.2

So do I have to ping them and see what comes up in command prompt

What am I looking for ?

Or do I have to insert the above and see if it connects

    Thanks

try typing ipconfig/renew in the command prompt screen.

What will this do reset them all ?

As the name suggests, it simply renews the ip address. Tbh, I think that it's a bit of a long shot. The problem may be a bit more fundamental. It may even be a problem with your Internet Provider, in which case they will sort it out eventually (may be worth a call though).
Hope someone else can help you!

    will try that

Dont know if its a router problem??

Trouble is ISP is Utv & its easier to call Elvis!!!

Will have to ring them and maybe request new router and see what they say as its happening to frequently for my liking

From past experience with UTV iv learned that there connection is always a bit "up and down" at times. Best advice is to go through all your settings first as UTV will tell you its your fault no matter what. After a 2 hr conversation with a technican they finally admitted defeat i was right.

So first of all reset your router.(Little button on the back with pen)

When the connection comes back up..

Go to run, type "cmd", In command type "ping 195.218.116.2"

This should come back with a reply. (This means you have a connection with there dns server)

Go to your router home page and check user/pass / dns servers/ lan ip.

Are you giving a WAN IP in your router page?? If so your connected properly.

Typing ipconfig /renew will renew your local ip but will not fix connection with you and UTV. If problem persists you can A. Make a batch that will ping there server to keep connection alive. or B. Do the Elvis thing and wait to be told your wrong!!

Well first, ping the DNS servers in the cmd prompt. If you get a response then your connection is fine, if you get no response then the DSL link could be down or UTV may be experiencing troubles. You can also use the Diagnostic page of the router config to ping servers. Try pinging them here too if the cmd prompt ping fails.

If the ping works, but you have no internet, then enter the DNS addresses manually. To do this, right click Network Places and select Properties. Find your wireless adapter there and right click --> properties again and scroll down to TCP/IP. Again with the properties here and you should be able to configure it manually. Enter the DNS servers as given. You may also have to enter an IP, mask and gateway here manually too. Just choose a local IP such as 192.168.1.2 (if it's available) or anything in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.255 should work. The mask should be 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is your router, 192.168.1.1

    That's worked for me.

    surprise surprise

Turned on PC when got home and Walla it works again ??

No changing of any settings ????

To be fair to Utv they rang me but they cannot tell me what the problem is only blaming it on some Eircom Engineer

There is a firmware update for the router but sceptical of downloading it

Thanks to everyone for their help

    Cheers:D
