Freezing computer

    Can anyone explain to me why, when i put a cd in the disc drive, more often than not my computer freezes.

    Does this happen to anyone else, and could anyone tel me something i could do to try and root out the problem

    What make is the cd drive?

    whatever the standard drives were in a 17 month old Dell Dimension 8400

    Think it's a liteon one (mine is a HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B).
    • Click its properties in Device Manager and check the Device Status for any errors.
    • Try removing it in Device Manager and rebooting PC.
    That's all I can think of right now.

    In device manager, check properties on your IDE controllers to ensure that none of your devices are running in PIO mode. They should all be using some form of UDMA.
