Have you checked the disks in another PC, are they showing up blank there after been burnt on the NEC drive?

Well you may not like to hear it but I've had 6 of those drives fail in various Dell laptops, got kind of sick replacing them even after only a month or two of operation.

They'd stop reading writable discs even though CD's and factory pressed DVD still worked occasionally, before getting a replacement I'd buy some media like Verbatim or Plextor discs which are high quality just to rule out that it is a media issue.

If you are still within warrenty ,ask for a alternative replacement. If not try updating the firmware for the drive, you could also try NEC for a replacement! If you just want to buy a new one Komplett have a sony slimline in stock.

Think part of the problem is the recording software i was using. Was using Sonic! and that created another dud last night. Swithed to Roxio and it burn fine.

Ta for that link Karoma, will flash it tonight.

While i'm on the subject of the DVD drive, anyone know how to make it region free?

It might not be possible to make it region free, but try the links that irlrobins posted, find your dvdrw model and see if theres a patch available.

Check that it is still running in Ultra DMA mode and not PIO.

Windows default behaviour when it encounters CRC media errors
is to downgrade the DMA settings in a permanent way. So a couple of
dodgy discs can get your DVD drive down into a useless mode.

Only solution is to uninstall the IDE channel that it is on, and either
reboot your machine (wait for H/W changes) or scan for H/W changes.
