If one has failed the leaving cert, but got a college degree and good work expierence how do you get around it in a CV. Surely your higher level of education cancels out that of lower standing, but you still wouldnt want to draw attention to it.

Secondly should one mention a physical disability on a cv and if so how?

When you say bad living what exactly are we talking about here. Drugs, Prostitution, Booze, Addiction to Mega Meanies. Pighead needs more details if he is to help you my friend.

I only mention the names and addresses of schools, and years attended. In the past my employers have only been interested in my training since school and relevant work experience.

Why not just give your 3rd level results, and simply state where & when you attended 2nd level? If it was me I'd do that, particularly if the 3rd level qualification equates with the type of work that you are seeking. Aside from that, play up any involvement in clubs or societies that you had while in college.

Regarding mentioning a disability when applying, I know this wont sound PC, but I wouldnt unless I absolutely had to. Reason being that it would be too onerous to prove that an employer was prejudiced in selecting interview candidates. Just my thoughts, anyhow.

Anyway Best of luck with the job seeking! :)

I did really bad in the leaving too. Just put down the school you were in and say that you completed the leaving certificate course there. It's not a lie cos you did complete the course, just dont say what the results were. Thats what i did. It never held me back and in the vast majority of interviews they haven't even mentioned it. Now I have some work experience behind me the focus is ususally on that and the various aspects and relevence of certain jobs and not on exam results.

Either put down better results or just don't mention them ie put down 4 honours and 2 passes kinda thing.

Even though most places claim to require it I've never actually had to produce mine (hell I've no idea where the damn thing is anyway, along with my birth cert!)

I had to go through my Leaving results in detail in the interview for my job in an accountancy firm.
But then I had put them down as they were very good, so I suppose it stood out as something positive about me to talk about.

Leave your LC results off your CV, your degree is the education that is going to be most relevant to your job.

I would imagine that you would have to note a disability on your CV. You'd have to put it in it's exact medical term too. Not sure where to put it though.

I know for a fact you dont have to mention anything about a disability, nor do you have to mention any medical condition on any job appliction unless specifically asked or it directly relates to your ability to carry out the job. However the question is if you opt to mention it how it should be done if at all.

Most CVs I get to see rarely mention LC. It's usually third level results and relevant work experience that stand out the most and are presented to an advantage. When you get deeper into your 20s/30s, LC results are the last thing prospective employers are looking for (taken as a given at that point), it's mostly as I said your qualifications and experience and in the interview, your attitude, aptitude and ability. And don't forget, personality.

I finished college last May and was looking for a job. I dodnt bother putting in my results even though they were fairly decent. I just didnt see the point. I had a good few interviews and never once was my leaving cert. brought up. They always asked about my college course and my work experience (even though they were only summer jobs)

I did a farly poor leaving and in my last job interview they asked for a copyof my results :o

Still, i've had the job six months and they never said anything...but I wouldn't list much about it on my cv...probably just school attended, years attended, and qualifications gained (J.C. & L.C.).

If you have a good LC however, i think you should show it off on your cv...you could put down subjects studied and/or honours & passes/ results etc.

this is your boss , hr are looking for those results again.... you have an hour to pack up your desk.....

but to be serious all the advise I have ever read says that as long as you have a 3rd level qualification it doesn't matter what you did in school...

WhiteWashMan was giving advice on CV's in the Work forum, and AFAIK his job includes read plenty of CV's, so maybe he'll help when he sees this.

Why would you bother putting leaving cert results on if you have a degree? It's totally irrelevent.

I've never been asked about my leaving results, not even for the part time jobs I did whilst in college.

If they ask for your leaving cert marks then stick them on otherwise don't it really isn't important.
