Wish to start a band for mature(ish) musicians

I'm a 28yo guitarist, with a broad range of musical influences, slanting more towards rock. My playing skills are about intermediate, but my interest in music is long standing and very strong. So, since most of the posts for startup bands are aimed at teenagers wishing to be the next Blink 182, older musicians with years of gigging experience, tribute bands or professionals looking for replacements - I want to see if there are any others out there like me who wish to get together to practice and improve their skills. This doesn't mean people just pissing about - I mean people who are serious + interested in making this successful. Short term would be to practise some covers to get working together, medium term is to start writing + gigging, then who knows???

At the moment I have no band experience, and am not sure yet how we'd approach getting together to rehearse etc. If you're enthusiastic and determined we should be able to work it out between us.

    This add is aimed at:
    - Adults musicians (preferably 20's)
    - who love music and
    - who really want to be involved in creating music with like-minded musicians
    - who believe they would have something to contribute to the process
    - who can play their instrument at a reasonable level (not total beginners!)
    - who want to take this seriously and see what we can achieve
    - who are living in Dublin area (we can arrange a meeting point)

This add is not aimed at
    - Super experienced musicians ready to start gigging next week
    - People looking to piss around a couple of times a week with some new friends
    - Kids who idolize bands in their 30's but laugh at musicians in their 20's!
    - Ego-maniacs looking for a band to play all of THEIR songs

Please include your details in the posts. Give some of your influences and if you have a preferred style you like to play, list that also. I'm open to suggestions.

No idle comments from uninterested parties please :-)

    Thanks,

Good start - only posted last night and have some good replies already. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) all guitarists! That's fine guitarists - keep those posts coming - the more the merrier!! But if you play something different don't be shy either!

Thanks to all who replied so far.

    Cheers,

If you have a few people maybe they'd like to all touch base with each other via email or PM if you make yourself known on this thread, so that like minded (or aged) people can hook up. I'm 30+ (ahem) quitarist and as rusty as heck. Though I'm not a learner. Don't really have the time (because you'd need loads) or interest (at the moment at least) in working towards gigging. I'd be happy just jamming and perhaps working towards home recording original music, just for the fun of it, or putting a website together to share the music. Kinda like amateur studio musicians if you know what I mean.

Just a thought but once you've got the bones of a few tracks together on guitar you could have a other people sit in on sessions with vocals, rythmn and drums etc. or do some work on a computer either.

You probably have way too many guitarists at this stage, but I might be interested too.Like Tempestsabre I am also 30+ (ahem), would certainly be interested in practice and improvement if nothing else.

you know it would have been nice to get a reply from you saying that the position was filled instead of just being ignored

Eh??? Is there a position filled on this?. I haven't heard anything.

    Hey folks,

It seems to me that there's loads of folks who are interested but haven't heard anything.

There's nothing to stop anybody setting something up anyway - I'd be interested, but live out near Mullingar. If anybody knows of somewhere we could meet (I guess it'd need to be around Dublin somewhere), then we could meet up. It doesn't need the Duffmeister to arrange this.

BTW I'm bassist on the other side of 40 (but only just). Played for 5 years.

Dani - cool song, I'm learning it at the moment (lets not get into the argument of "they were much better before Blood Sugar etc...")

    Cheers,

Hey, not a bad idea Redjeep, many posters actually do sometimes just vanish without a trace. I live in Dublin, no problem meeting up there.

Also, I can suggest some convenient places to meet & go to in the city centre etc.

Hey Brother A , Dani, (anybody else)

Why not go for it then ? If somebody could suggest somewhere.

It might be an idea to think of a couple of songs to have prep'ed for the first meeting. I'll send you both a PM and we'll try and work something out.

    Cheers.

    hi all,

Sounds all very interesting. I'm a non-professional but experienced singer from Amsterdam. Just 3 months in Dublin and would love to pick up music again. Have sung lead in several bands, have done a muscial and sang in a gospel choir for a couple of years.

I would like very much to be a part of this starting up a band thing. Duffmeister, I will pm you.

    Hello.

I am a 29 year old living in Dublin who has a very strong interest in starting a band.
I cannot play guitar etc, but I am pretty strong on the tin whistle/flute.

I would love to try and recreate a band such as the Pogues. Prob needing a few musicians (the Pogues had 8 remember), but I also am in to various guitar based rock bands.

I feel I would make a great vocalist in any band.

    Hello Duffmeister!

Hows it going man? The idea of joining/forming a band has been niggling me for a while now, and after researching a bit I have decided to try the net.

Although not able to play any stringed instruments, I am pretty nifty on the tin whistle and flute! My musical influences(to name but a few) would be the Pogues, Waterboys, Dubliners and Christy Moore (thats the Irish rock kinda thing) And I also am an avid listener of bands such as Coldplay, U2 , Franz Ferinand, Killers, Oasis, Greenday etc.

I would rate my self as a pretty good vocalist too having sung many a song on and off stage before.

My ideal dream would be to get a youthful, folk/rock based outfit such as the Pogues or Dubliners reformed. And I would love the idea of "rocking" some of the more traditional Irish folk songs, we could give it our own distinct sounds with Electric guitars and heavy drumming going on in the background. (think of Monto or Waxys gargle by the Dubliners but with a bit of youthful rock injected in it!!)

I hope to hearf from you soon.

Did anything come of this thread?Did anyone meet up?I would still be interested in meeting with people that would be interested in jamming and improvement. If anyone's interested PM me.

I had a few emails, but no one was really near me. Which is a problem as my time is limited, I got the impression that some people wanted to work towards a gigging band, and I'm not at that level or have the time for that. Initially I just wanted to learn a few tracks and jam with someone. See where it goes etc.
