In an age where people are dedicating their lives to losing weight, my friend has a problem. She finds it really hard to put on weight. Im just looking for advice, coz its really bothering her! Its not that she doesn't eat either, she eats like a horse, but to no effect!

I'd say see a doc first off - My uncle has a fungus (yuk :) ) in his stomach that literally eats the food before it has a chance to get near the blood stream. He used to be really skinny but he was advised to take a suplement - nothing major, just like vitamins - and he's perfectly healthy weight now.

Yah I think that would be best for her, to go to a professional. Well in fairness she does eat a pile of junk, but she also has a huge breakfast, lunch and dinner and supper!

She should make an appointment with her GP to rule out any underlying medical problem & if all is clear, she should be referred to a nutritionist who can advise on diet....I think quality of food rather than quantity would help her....:)

check out the stickies on the fitness forum on gaining weight. most of them related to guys trying to make big muscle gains, but if your friend is looking to put on weight, she should be trying to put on muscle rather than fat, much healthier!

Have a look at Smartspot, there are great ideas on what you should be eating and how to keep active.

This is an interesting question. My aunt recently has a similar problem - she can't put on weight at all, no matter how much she eats. Years ago, she actually used carry a little weight, but lost it all through dieting, etc.

Now she can't get it back at all, and is skinnier than she wants to be.

So perhaps those people who end up getting really thin through diet can end up getting "stuck" that way by somehow changing the bodies metabolism?

Im not sure how correct this is but I remember reading somewhere that if you have once been overweight, it is easier to regain that weight than for say someone to gain weight how has never been fat. Something to do with fat cell vessles remaining or something?

Anyway wandering off topic. To OP if your friend wants to put on weight, I'd reccomend like many others seeing a heatlh professional. Thats if she does. She might be quite happy... ;)

Im the same, no matter how much I eat the weight just doesn't come on. I'm not bothered by it and I know my metabolism will slow down later on in life so i'm gonna enjoy being thin!

My mum is the same, she's quite underweight and very little seems to change that.

Seraphina's advice to check out the fitness forum stickies is a good idea. Possibly your friend is eating a lot, but not of the right foods. If she's seriously concerned, she should consult her GP.
