Sony Vaio, Windows XP and IE 6.0.. incompatible?

    Hi,

just bought a new Sony Vaio laptop. It came with XP home edition and Internet Explorer 6.0 installed. I also then installed MS Office 2003 prof. edition.

The problem is that webpages are not completely loading. The background colour is staying white and the page is impossible to navigate. Password "Boxes" etc...are completely out of sync and most times unusuable. I have installed Firefox but the problem is still there. I also have updated Windows and downloaded patches. Hours of researching websites for likely answers has gone into this. Is there a simple solution out there?

Please, please, please somebody help me as I am going nuts trying to work around it.

    All replies appreciated,

    Igora

Okay seeing as Firefox and IE don't share the same rendering engine for web pages whatever is going on must be system wide. (When you installed Firefox you didn't import anything from IE did you ?)

Have you scanned for spyware & viruses, also is WinXP service pack 2 installed ?

Assuming the system is clean off the top of my head the two things that come to mind are some sort of proxy/ad blocker and damaged system RAM.

What anti-virus/firewall/security program is running in the background something like Norton or Zonealarm and is a cookie or advertisement filter enabled in those programs ?

Test the systems RAM with Memtest+ download a bootable version in whatever form floppy, CD etc that suits you the best and leave it run for an hour or two and see if it finds any errors.

Did the problem only appear when you installed Office 2003 ?

The laptop came with Norton AV. I took it to a guy to transfer files from my old machine. He removed Norton and installed AVG. I am almost certain the problem arose after I installed MS office. I had office on before I took it to him and the IE problem was there then too.

Try closing or disabling as many programs running in the background or in the systray [down by the clock/date] to see if something that is running is the cause of the interference.

Office 2003 shouldn't be the cause of this but do a simple test try un-installing it & see what happens.

Also if you want us to take a look at what is loading at startup run Hijack This & do a scan with the save to a txt log option then post the log as an attachment to your post. Hijack This will show exactly what is running at startup it is an anti spyware program in case your wondering.

Have you done a full system scan with an anti-spyware program like Microsofts Windows Defender if not then do so.

Check the integrity of the system files open a command prompt and type sfc /scannow it will check the operating system files and tell you if they have been corrupted and need to be replaced - you'll need to have your XP CD handy if so.

A wild shot but try installing IE7 beta 2 it is publicly available and fairly reliable at this stage.

There doesn't look to be anything malicious there but you do have an awful lot of Sony related software & services running in the background.

Personally I'd remove/disable as much of the Sony software as possible but that may not be something you want to do.

I'd uninstall Office 2003 and if that doesnt fix the problem I'd check the OS with sfc /scannow from the command prompt or the run feature.

I have sony vaio and had some wierd issues with googletalk not working after working with someone from google found out it was a sony problem and was fixed by updating the sony software...

I'd recommend removing any unwanted sony software also (although some you do need for all the extras those vaios have)

But then once you have uninstalled ALL unwanted/un-necessary software i'd do the following:

    1) Run windows update - get all the latest updates/patches
    2) Run Office Update - same
    3) Run VAIO Update

All this will take a while but its better to have latest patches/software and start hunting problem down from there

    Thanks folks..

All this is a great learning curve for me..Lets hope my problem will be sorted soon..

    a couple of issues..

    1. If I uninstall Office, will I be able to reinstall it again? This is my second installation of it as I had it on a PC too.

    2. I downloaded Defender and nothing showed up.

    3. How do I remove all the Sony Software successfully....for eg vaio club etc..
I cannot ever see myself using half of the features on this machine. I received it as a present so did not actually order them.

    Thanks again..

    hi

    have a sony vaio fs315

first thing to do get rid of home format hard drives
install winxp pro and sp2 + all updates
next throw another 512 mb if you don't already have a gig in there
next install avg free and sygate personal firewall and diable msfirewall
    configure new firewall
you now have an ass kicking laptop
    no more problems

all sony software available on web if you ever need it!

Before you try any of the above.

Check Control Panel -> Accesibility Options -> display tab -> High Contrast is not ticked.

I had some thing similar to you. That was the cause.

Secret Squirrel... You are a genius...

That High Accessibility Button was ticked. Hard to believe the problem was so easily solved in the end.

Thanks a million to all who helped me.

You're welcome - took me weeks of on/off goggling to find that fix for mine.

That box should be labeled "Fúck up my Web browsing please"
